Purpose of the Program

The Associate Degree in Health Sciences introduces you to the rapidly evolving Australian health sector and provides insight into both individual and public health perspectives. Upon completion, you'll be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to work as a paraprofessional in the Australian health sector, including an in-depth understanding of the Australian healthcare system, major health issues affecting the country, and the ability to manage yourself and others effectively at work. You will also acquire general knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of various professions in the health industry and help you make informed decisions about your career path. This program also provides pathways into multiple bachelor degrees.

This program will use blended delivery, utilising a mixture of face to face (on campus) and online delivery and is delivered at RMIT City Campus. Learning activities include face-to-face teaching, tutorials, laboratory practicals and online activities.

The first year focuses on understanding the human body, both in states of health and of disease. You will be introduced to the Australian health system and the roles of different health professionals. You will also explore the functions of health promotion both locally and globally.

The second year further explores health promotion and provides you with the knowledge and skills to work with individuals and groups to promote health through education and other strategies. You will have the opportunity to experience Bachelor degree level study, undertaking a University Elective and ONPS2702 STEM for Sustainable Development. As part of these courses, you will study alongside Bachelor enrolled students.

You will also undertake a capstone experience in the course PUBH1408 Health: Industry Project and Practice. You will take part in a work-integrated learning (WIL) activity that involves a minimum of 10 days of supervised work experience in industry. This will help you apply what you've learned and prepare you for your professional career.

Graduates may find employment in government departments, local governments, community health centres, aged care agencies and health promotion organisations.
