Purpose of the Program

The Bachelor of Applied Science (Property and Valuation) (Honours) will develop the theoretical knowledge and technical skills required to ensure you effectively meet the needs of key stakeholders within the complex and diverse property and valuation sector. The program focuses on developing the cognitive, technical and professional communication skills to enable you to work effectively as a property professional and to meet the industry need for specialisation.

The courses in this program have been designed to enable you to critically engage with contemporary property theory, situating your learning in wider social, environmental, regulatory, technical and economic contexts. 

You will critically evaluate and apply property concepts and methodologies including in relation to valuation, property development, investment, feasibility analysis, funds management and asset management. In doing so, you will develop your ability to formulate and justify innovative solutions to industry problems and case study scenarios.  As a critical thinker you will be able to apply your well developed analytical skills to critically review, interpret and synthesise property and valuation theory and knowledge. 

Your developed specialised skills include: investment, development and valuation techniques, property feasibility analytical skills and property data analysis. Your developed skills will be underpinned by your research and critical assessment of an increasingly complex industry and market.

A capstone experience is offered through the two final year courses: OMGT 2252 Securitised Property and OMGT 2251 Applied Property Development. Through a professional practice project you will integrate and synthesise your knowledge, connect theory to practice as well as demonstrate your holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes.

 The delivery of this program is primarily face to face, with some online learning components. 

Upon successful completion of this program you will have developed the specialised skills and knowledge to enable you to work in a range of roles as a property specialist including; valuation, funds and investment management, property portfolio management, property asset management and property development.

Graduates of this program will be equipped with a sound knowledge of property as an asset class within local and global contexts and be able to independently analyse industry trends, current and emerging. You will be adept in working independently and collaboratively, applying your well developed cognitive and technical skills to address and respond to industry issues, scenarios, trends and problems.

Graduates will be work ready for the property industry in all of the following areas, and will qualify for professional certification as a: property valuer, property developer, funds manager, property manager, asset manager, analyst and general property professional.

Successful completion of this program will enable you to acquire skills in local and global contexts, supporting your further learning, research and life-long learning. 

Successful completion of this program provides a pathway into a Masters. Upon successful completion of this program you may also be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University.

Articulation and pathways

Successful completion of RMIT's Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) guarantees entry into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Property and Valuations) (Honours) with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study).

Successful completion of RMIT's Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) guarantees entry into this program with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study). 

After successfully completing at least 6 first year common courses in the program structure with no more than 2 repeats, students can apply for entry into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Construction Management) or the Bachelor of Applied Science (Project Management).

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.

Upon successful completion of this program you may wish to continue your studies in the Master of Property (MC212), Master of Project Management (MC210) or Master of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building (MC209). Up to 96 credit points of exemption will be available.

Entrance requirements

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school) qualification.

Prerequisites 

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in any Mathematics.           

International English language requirement

A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

The Bachelor of Applied Science (Property and Valuation) (Honours) is informed by consultation with an Industry Advisory Committee, whose membership is drawn from the Property industry.

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Applied Science (Property and Valuation) (Honours) graduates are entitled to apply for membership of the Australian Property Institute (API), and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
