Purpose of the Program
The Bachelor of Computer Science develops a skill set that spans from theoretical and algorithmic foundations to cutting-edge developments in computing. It provides an extensive treatment of systems infrastructure, software methods and technologies, and application technologies from both the theoretical and practical aspects. In addition, computer scientists are expected to have some understanding of all aspects of computing, some treatment of computer hardware as well as organisational issues, all of which are included in the program. This program concentrates on developing capabilities in theory, principles, applications and innovation of these topics.
As a graduate of this program, you will be knowledgeable and creative; have excellent programming skills; be capable of designing, implementing and maintaining complex software systems which drive mobile devices, social media, intelligent robots and more; and be able to readily adapt to new advances in the rapidly changing information technology environment and/or continue towards a research degree. There is a range of major and minor options that you can choose to tailor your degree with, allowing you to follow your area of interest and enabling a variety of potential career paths.
This program has been designed to meet the strong demand for skilled professionals in roles such as Analyst/Programmer, Software Developer, Web and mobile programmer, ICT Security Specialist, or research scientist (pathway for higher qualifications such as PhD).
Available major options include Advanced Computer Science, Cyber Security, and Enterprise Systems Development. Available minor options include Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Blockchain Technologies, Cloud Computing, Creative Computing, Cyber Assurance, Data Science, Bioinformatics, and Data Analysis.
You will develop cutting-edge industry knowledge and skills that are essential for employment as a competent software developer with the potential to move into a leadership role. With RMIT’s distinct strengths in industry connection, this degree offers extensive work-integrated learning opportunities for students to get early exposure to industry contexts and environments, developing professional and transferrable skills sets ready for employment.
This degree provides an industry related experience through completion of a capstone project COSC2408 – Programming Project 1, which will give you the opportunity to integrate, critically reflect on and consolidate what you have learnt in your program.
Subject to meeting the specified criteria, it may be possible to transfer with advanced standing into the four year BP347 Bachelor of Computer Science (Professional) program, which includes an industry internship. More information is provided in the Work Integrated Learning section of this guide.
While most courses in the program are delivered on campus, others are delivered via a combination of predominantly online activities supported by some campus-based activities.

Articulation:
Articulation agreements between RMIT programs enable students graduating from an RMIT qualification to achieve advanced standing in a higher level qualification.
Graduates from the RMIT AD006 Associate Degree in Information Technology program can articulate into BP094P23 Bachelor of Computer Science with credit. Credit will be assessed consistent with the principles of the RMIT University Credit Policy. Note: A standard year of full-time undergraduate study at RMIT University is 96 credit points).
Pathways:
On successful completion of the first two years of this program at a minimum GPA of 3.0, you are eligible to apply for transfer with advanced standing to the BP347 Bachelor of Computer Science (Professional) that includes an additional year with internship.
Other pathways from this program include BH012CS Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) (Honours), MC267 Master of Data Science, and MC271 Master of Artificial Intelligence.
Acceptance into these programs would be subject to each programs' entry requirements.

Program Entry Requirements:
Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education, or equivalent. For information on international qualifications and corresponding entry requirements that are equivalent to Australian academic entry requirements, see the Country equivalents web page.
Prerequisites:
Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English other than EAL; or a study score of at least 27 in English as an Additional Language (EAL); Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in one of: Maths: General Mathematics or Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics, or equivalent studies.
English Language Requirements:
A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English equivalents web page.

External Accreditation
The Bachelor of Computer Science is conditionally accredited at a professional level by the Australian Computer Society, which accredits Information and Communication Technology related programs that are offered by Australian universities, both onshore and offshore.
Industry Links
The School of Computing Technologies has a strong Industry Advisory Committee (IAC), which is the main link between the program and industry.
Membership includes staff from major IT companies with global and local presence. The committee meets quarterly and provides feedback on the currency of our programs, the changing needs of Industry and has input into the design of new programs. It also actively contributes to the School through participation in seminars, marketing events, industry awards and scholarships.
This program is not accredited by any external industry or professional body.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.
