The Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary) offers you an education degree for both primary and secondary teaching through a combination of theoretical knowledge and professional experience. It prepares you for the dynamic and challenging world of education and provides you with globally transferable skills and a qualification that can lead you to practising as a teacher in Australia and overseas. You will experience a variety of contemporary, interactive learning and teaching approaches and will have the opportunity to participate in a range of innovative Professional Experience practises within a variety of educational settings in both primary and secondary contexts that meaningfully integrate theory and practise.
The Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary) is delivered primarily on campus using a blended delivery model of both face-to-face and online learning.
You will undertake a series of work integrated learning experiences in schools and other educational settings throughout the program. Throughout your study, you will complete a minimum of 80 days supervised placement in school settings. During these experiences, you will progressively demonstrate achievement of each descriptor of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) Professional Standards for Teachers at a graduate level.
In your final year you will undertake a capstone experience in TCHE2717 Professional Experience: Teaching Performance Assessment. This capstone experience comprises your final teaching placement and an independent action research project into an aspect of your teaching practise. You will have the opportunity to choose whether your final placement is in a primary or secondary school. During your final teaching placement, you will demonstrate effective classroom teaching practise including planning, teaching, assessing, reflecting, and appraising. In your action research project, you will report on the impact your practise has on student learning. Successful completion of this Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) is a requirement for graduation.
Upon enrolling in this program, you will select and complete a series of courses in one of the following five major teaching areas,which will allow you to teach the curriculum to a range of classes from Year 7 through to VCE:
- Biology
- English
- Mathematics
- Physical Education
- Psychology
If you wish to select the Mathematics Teaching Area it is strongly recommended that you have completed VCE Mathematics (Methods) at a Year 12 level.
On completion of the program, you will be a professional practitioner within the field of primary and secondary education possessing a broad knowledge of learning, teaching, curriculum and assessment as both a primary generalist and a secondary specialist in one teaching area.
You will be eligible to apply for teacher registration and to teach in schools, however you will have knowledge, skills and experience to also work in private enterprise, government agencies and community-based organisations. Through critical reflection you will work ethically and collaboratively with colleagues and external professional and community representatives.

Successful completion of RMIT's Diploma of Teacher Education Preparation guarantees entry into this program subject to completing the Teaching Suitability Assessment, with 12 credit points of exemption granted.
Upon successful completion of this program you may be eligible to undertake further studies in postgraduate programs at RMIT University, subject to program entry requirements, including the Masters by Research program MR209 Master of Education.

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent with an ATAR (or equivalent) of 70, inclusive of selection rank adjustments. For equivalents to Australian academic entry requirements, see the Country equivalency web page.
Prerequisites
- Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Units 1 and 2: satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of Maths: General Mathematics, Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics or Units 3 and 4: any Mathematics.
- Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English other than EAL; or a study score of at least 27 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or equivalent studies.
International English language requirement
A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 7.5 with a minimum score of 7.0 in reading and writing and 8.0 in speaking and listening. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.
Teaching Suitability Assessment
All applicants must satisfactorily complete the Teaching Suitability Assessment (TSA). The assessment is designed to evaluate your non-academic attributes that are important to the teaching profession. For further information about the TSA, visit the Teaching Suitability Assessment webpage.
Essential requirements for enrolment or graduation:
If you wish to select the Mathematics Major Teaching Area it is strongly recommended that you have completed VCE Mathematics (Methods) at a Year 12 level.
Working with children check
Please note that to undertake the Professional Experience courses across the program, you must provide a satisfactory working with children check. If you are not able to provide this, you will be unable to complete the program.
Literacy and numeracy test
The Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) is a national test required by the Federal Government. All students enrolled in an accredited initial teacher education course (either undergraduate or postgraduate) will be expected to sit and meet the test standard prior to graduation. The test is administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER).
You are required to have attempted LANTITE by the end of your first year of your studies. Preservice teachers can sit the test up to three times before there is a need for further approval to complete a fourth or fifth (final) attempt. Please note that you are required to be physically in Australia to undertake this test at a test centre. Counseling and support are available for those who do not pass the test.

The BP320 Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary) is accredited with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) until December 2029. Accredited programs are required to undergo reaccredition every 5 years. VIT states that if a provider has made an application for accreditation for an existing program, the approval is taken to be current until an accreditation decision has been made.
In order to teach in Victoria, graduates must be registered with VIT and graduate from accredited programs. VIT allows students to commence an initial teacher education (ITE) program that is undergoing accreditation with the proviso that the accreditation be finalised before graduation. The School of Education has many links with industry, which take on a variety of forms including; schools, educational institutions, and community organisations. The program is taught by academics who have strong professional links and current experience in the education sector. In addition, the School of Education regularly engages outside educational experts as guest lecturers to ensure that students are exposed to current and emerging developments in education.
This program has an Industry Advisory Committee (IAC). Membership is diverse and drawn from external industry and professional institutions across primary and secondary settings. These committees help inform program development and ensure that program content and student learning outcomes remain closely aligned with the needs of future employers. In addition, academic staff maintain connections with industry to develop and deliver work integrated learning experiences as well as offer advice on professional careers.
