Purpose of the Program
Space is a USD$345 billion global industry which has doubled over the previous decade, with strong growth expected to continue in the medium term. To better capitalise on both local and global growth opportunities, the Australian Space Agency was created in mid-2018, spawning a new era of growth and innovation for the Australian space industry. The Australian Space Agency has a goal of tripling the size of Australia’s space sector to $12B and growing the workforce from the current 10,000 FTE to 20,000 by 2030.
This program allows you to prepare for an exciting career in the space industry. In addition to physics, you will study complementary courses in satellite remote sensing, IT and data analytics, signal and systems engineering as well as spaceflight systems design. These interdisciplinary linkages will provide you with the basic building blocks of scientific knowledge and engineering fundamentals in the field of space science and technology. Knowledge is always complemented with practical experiences in laboratory and modelling courses. Since mathematics provides the necessary scaffolding for doing space science, two mathematics and one statistics courses (Calculus and Analysis 1 and 2, and Data Preprocessing) are also core courses in the space science program. Combining the expertise of the Schools of Science and Engineering from the College of Science, Engineering and Health, the Bachelor of Space Science prepares you to meet the challenges of a fast-moving and technology-driven space industry.
A strong focus of the program is WIL. Your capstone WIL experience will be either The Professional Scientist ONPS2335 or Science Work Experience 1 ONPS2543, and Science Project 1 ONPS2186 where you will use all your knowledge and skills to work, perhaps in teams, to develop and implement your own research project.
Further course selection can be individualised to an extent by taking other university-wide elective courses offered by the University. This allows you a degree of flexibility to help you achieve your vocational and academic goals.
This program is delivered on campus; some courses may be available online.
Articulation and pathways
Articulation agreements between RMIT programs enable students graduating from an RMIT qualification to achieve advanced standing in a higher level qualification.
If you have completed a nationally accredited Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Physics, you may be granted credit of up to 48 credit points, respectively.
Students in the generic BP229P7 or BP229PHYS plan may choose to transfer into the Bachelor of Space Science. Credit will be given to courses completed that align with the Bachelor of Space Science.
Successful completion of this program provides you with pathways into honours, masters by coursework, masters by research and PhD programs.

Entrance requirements
Very Important: This plan is being phased out.
BP330 - Bachelor of Space Science plan has been discontinued and will no longer accept new students after Semester 2 2022.
Program entry requirements
Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education, or equivalent.

Prerequisites
Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 20 in one of Mathematical Methods (CAS) or Specialist Mathematics; and a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English.
English language requirements
A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0, or equivalent.

External accreditation and industry links
The School of Science is formally linked to industry through its Industry Advisory Committee (IAC), and through various consulting and research projects undertaken by staff. Members of the IAC provide valuable input and are a major driver for change in the school's programs, particularly with regard to industry trends and future graduate capabilities, the use of state-of-the-art equipment and, very importantly, support for the introduction of work-integrated learning (WIL) and global engagement. Industry partners have a strong link with RMIT, with a number of opportunities for you to participate in industry based learning activities. Feedback from the IAC has been fundamental to the design of the Bachelor of Space Science program as an interdisciplinary degree based on a core of physics, mathematics, geospatial science and engineering.
Whilst there is no external accreditation for this program, graduates of this program may be eligible to become a member of the National Space Society of Australia, Space Industry Association of Australia and Space Association of Australia Inc.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
