This National Training Package qualification reflects the role of workers who assist dental practitioners during oral health care procedures. The role includes maintaining high standards of infection control, assisting with practice administration and supporting quality and professionalism in the dental sector.
The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice. To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 350 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the Units of Competency. No occupational licencing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

This program is delivered as a traineeship. To enrol in this program as a trainee, you should:
- Make contact with Australian Apprenticeship Support Network who can explain Traineeships and assist with finding employment as a dental assistant
- Sign a training contract with your employer and the Apprenticeship Network provider
- Nominate RMIT as your preferred Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
You will be contacted by RMIT after we are notified by the Apprenticeship Network to organise your enrolment.
There are no pre-requisites or selection tasks for this program.
Additional requirements
All students are required to provide evidence of vaccination for Covid-19 prior to attending both RMIT and the Royal Dental Hospital, Melbourne.

The Certificate III in Dental Assisting is a nationally endorsed qualification. On-site training for this program is based at the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne through a long standing partnership with Dental Health Services Victoria. At the hospital, you are able to interact with other Dental professionals for example Dental Radiography students, Dental Technicians and Dental Prosthetists. RMIT University through its Industry Advisory Committee, consults with industry directly. RMIT has been at the forefront of Dental Assisting training and education for over 25 years and has built up an extensive network of industry links. Industry Advisory Committee members represent both Public Health and a range of private practices, both regional and metropolitan.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
