Purpose of the Program

The Certificate III in Carpentry is an industry based apprenticeship program and the primary qualification for becoming a qualified Carpenter. The purpose of this program is to support you with training and assessment in order for you to successfully complete your apprenticeship.

The training includes setting out, manufacturing, constructing, assembling, installing and repairing products made using timber and non-timber materials.

Once you have completed all the requirements of the Certificate III in Carpentry, you should be able to work in the building and contruction industry as a Carpenter. Occupational titles may include: 

  • Carpenter - Commercial 
  • Carpenter - Formwork 
  • Carpenter - Residential

Articulation and pathways

You may be eligible for credit into other RMIT University programs for successfully completing this program upon application to other RMIT University programs. Please check with admissions officer of your program of choice.

Students may apply to continue their studies in the CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction program at another institute.

Entrance requirements

Students must be employed in the construction industry with a suitable employer to sign into a carpentry apprenticeship.  

This program is delivered as an apprenticeship. To enrol in this program as an apprentice you should: 

  • Make contact with Australian Apprenticeship Support Network who can explain Apprenticeships and assist with finding employment as an apprentice. 
  • Sign a training contract with your employer and the Apprenticeship Network provider 
  • Nominate RMIT as your preferred Registered Training Organisation (RTO). 

You will be contacted by RMIT after we are notified by the Apprenticeship Network to organise your enrolment.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.
