Purpose of the Program

The program provides a broad set of foundation screen and media skills preparing students for further study in the specialised streams that occur at Diploma level including Content Creation, Animation, Gaming and Visual Effects, Screen and Media Production, and Live Production. 

This program has been designed to suit people who have an interest in one or more areas of the screen and media field such as screen production, camera operation, video editing, animation, game design, digital design, VFX, post-production, or film making and may have limited pre-existing knowledge.

The areas of learning students undertake include:

  • Location and studio camera operation
  • Vision and sound editing
  • Digital Design - interface and application design
  • Animation and Storyboarding 
  • Creative production planning and management
  • Creative Industry investigation and work practices 

There is a strong emphasis on the practical application of learning through creative projects, productions and activities that incorporate the skills and knowledge requirements of each course. Students will work on both individual and group projects over the duration of the program.

Delivery is primarily in studio and computer lab-based environments. Students will use a variety of current industry standard production equipment and a variety of applications within the Adobe Creative Suite.

Entrance requirements

There are no minimum academic entry requirements for this program. Applicants must meet the minimum University Entry requirements for this program.

Entry into this program may be competitive, and applications are assessed in the order that they are received while places are still available.

MANDATORY PERSONAL STATEMENT

Applicants are required to complete and submit the following Personal Statement:

  • Please describe a piece of media content you have been inspired by recently and explain why. (e.g. animation, game, app, TV/web/streaming series, movie) 
  • What area(s) of screen and media are you interested in and why?
  • What are your aspirations/ambitions related to your field of interest?  E.g., Further study, personal or creative development, entering the workforce, etc.
  • What experience do you have with screen and media (if any)?

Your application to this qualification will not be considered until the required Personal Statement has been submitted.

External accreditation and industry links

In Australia, there are no professional bodies that recognise or accredit programs in Screen and Media. However, this program is strongly supported by representatives from key industry areas. Course content and assessment is informed by industry through the Industry Advisory Committee. The teachers in the program are all practitioners with current knowledge of trends and work practices. The industry experience you gain through your study will help you to establish industry links, in a range of areas across the Screen and Media industry.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services
