Purpose of the Program
The objective of this program is to develop your skills and knowledge and prepare you for the role of a graphic designer at the beginning of your professional career. Graphic designers work in many different commercial and community contexts across both print and digital media. At this level, the designer is likely to be working in junior or generalist roles. Their work may include or have links to areas such advertising and promotion, art direction, branding, corporate identity, instructional design, packaging, signage and web design.
You will combine technical, creative and conceptual skills to create designs that meet client requirements and solve a range of visual communication challenges. You will gain a sound understanding of design theory and practice and be able to analyse and synthesise information from a range of sources to generate design solutions.

Successful completion of Certificate IV in Design guarantees entry to the Diploma of Graphic Design.
Successful completion of this program guarantees entry into the following:
- Associate Degree in Graphic Design with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study).
- BP115 Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) with 48 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 semester full-time study).
- BP343 Bachelor of Business with 96 credit points.
If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.

Applicants must meet one of the following entry requirements:
Successful completion of the RMIT Certificate IV in Design
OR
All other applicants must complete and submit the selection task requirements.
The Selection task comprises a folio.
Folio
Prepare a selection task with three (3) different pieces of your original graphic design work.
Each piece must have a resolved outcome and demonstrate your design skills. Include 1 page of process work for each piece, along with a short description explaining the idea, target audience, and design choices.
One piece must include the use of typography & layout and demonstrated use of industry design software
Recommended for inclusion:
- A variety of original design concepts and outcomes.
- 2D or 3D design, typography, and industry software use eg Adobe CC suite or similar.
- Freehand or digital drawings/illustrations.
- Creative use of design elements like colour, texture, and composition.
- Short description for each piece
International English Language Requirement
A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 5.5, with no band less than 5.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English equivalents web page

There are currently no organisations that accredit programs in Graphic Design in Australia

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
