Purpose of the Program
This qualification reflects the role of building professionals who apply knowledge of structural principles, risk and financial management, estimating, preparing and administering building and construction contracts, selecting contractors, overseeing the work and its quality and managing construction work in building projects including residential and commercial with the following limitations:
Residential construction limited to National Construction Code Class 1 and 10 buildings to a maximum of 3 storeys.
Commercial construction limited to National Construction Code Class 2 to 9 buildings, Type C and B construction.
Individuals in these roles carry out moderately complex tasks in a speacialist field, working independantly and as part of a team leading a deliverable with others. They may apply their skills accross wide range of construction industries or as a business owner ( sole trader/ contractor).
Completion of the general construction induction training program specified by the model Code of Practice for Construction Work is required for any person who is to carry out construction work. Achievement of unit CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement.
Builder licensing varies across States and Territories and requirements additional to the attainment of this qualification may be required.

Successful completion of the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) will provide Guaranteed entry into the following programs:
- Bachelor of Applied Science (Project Management) (Honours) with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study).
- Bachelor of Applied Science (Property and Valuation) (Honours) with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study).
- Bachelor of Business with 96 credit points exemption (equivalent to 1 year full-time study).
Successful completion of RMIT's Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) may provide entry and into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Construction Management) (Honours) with 144 credit points of exemption (equivalent to 1.5 years full time). Selection is based on academic merit and is not guaranteed.

Entrance requirements
- Successful completion of Australian Year 12 or equivalent; or
- Successful completion of post-secondary studies (Certificate II or higher) in a related field (e.g. building, construction, plumbing etc); or
- At least 6 months’ work experience in a related field (e.g. building, construction, plumbing etc).
Please note: Student require a Construction Industry White Card (CPCCWHS1001A Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry) to take part in required site visits and or/associated assessments.
International Students:
The English language proficiency requirements is managed centrally by RMIT International who review students English Test scores e.g. IELTS (Academic) results (minimum overall band of 5.5 (with no individual band below 5.0)) and offer is only made if students meet English proficiency requirements. Applications are further reviewed by program manager (if needed) followed by discussions with the students before accepting their applications.
External accreditation and industry links
On completion of this program graduates holding this qualification fulfils the academic requirements as one part of the requirement for registration as a Registered Builder with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA).
Practical experience through further employment in the industry will be required as a part of the requirement for the registration.
The Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) has been developed in response to industry needs and is recognised by organisations within the building and construction industry - the Master Builders Association of Victoria, the Housing Industry Association of Victoria, and the Australian Institute of Building, who recognise completion of the program as fulfilling the requirement for associate membership of the Institute.
As this is a national qualification, there may be variations interstate in building registration rules and regulations – students are reminded of this if they are intending to work outside of Victoria

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
