Purpose of the Program

This Diploma qualification reflects accounting job roles in financial services and other industries, including assistant accountant, accounts payable and accounts receivable officers, payroll service providers, and employees performing a range of accounting tasks for organisations in a range of industries. Individuals in these roles apply solutions to a range of often complex problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources. They apply initiative to plan, coordinate and evaluate their own work and provide guidance to others within defined guidelines.

This qualification also provides a pathway for those wishing to pursue studies in the Advanced Diploma of Accounting and/or higher education degrees in the accounting field (e.g. BP351 Bachelor of Accounting at RMIT).

For those students considering a career as a Tax Agent, this qualification includes one unit that constitutes an approved Tax Practitioner Board (TPB) course in Australian taxation law, and this unit may contribute towards meeting the academic requirements for registration as a Tax Agent. Articulation and pathways

Upon successful completion of the C5424 (FNS50222) Diploma of Accounting qualification you may gain entry to the C6181 (FNS60222) Advanced Diploma of Accounting.

Students who graduate from the Advanced Diploma of Accounting qualification are guaranteed entry into BP351 Bachelor of Accounting with up to 16 units of credit (or 192 credit points).

Entrance requirements

Students wishing to undertake the Diploma of Accounting (FNS50222) must have completed the following units of competency (or equivalent):

  • FNSACC321 Process financial transactions and extract interim reports
  • FNSACC322 Administer subsidiary accounts and ledgers
  • FNSACC418 Work effectively in the accounting and bookkeeping industry
  • FNSACC421 Prepare financial reports (this unit is the equivalent version of BSBFIA401 Prepare financial reports).

International students

International students must complete FNS40222 Certificate IV in Accounting (or equivalent) to be eligible to enrol in FNS50222 Diploma of Accounting.

As well as the above requirements, they must meet one of the following English Proficiency tests:     

  • IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 5.5 (with no individual band below 5.0)
  • TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 50 (with minimum of 5 in Reading, 5 in Listening, 14 in Speaking and 15 in Writing)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A): minimum score of 42 (with no communication band less than 36)
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 162 with no less than 154 in any component

External accreditation and industry links

The development of the program structure and the choice of elective units appropriate to the accounting and bookkeeping industry were informed by an Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) comprised of representatives of the accounting and bookkeeping sector and RMIT educators.

This qualification includes one unit that is part of an approved Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) course in Australian taxation law, which is required as part of the academic requirements for registration as a Tax Agent. Those seeking registration as a Tax Agent with the TPB should check current registration requirements with the TPB as these requirements are reviewed regularly. All academic staff maintain close contact with the accounting and bookkeeping industry through various professional development activities.  Some casual/sessional academic staff maintain employment or operate their own business in this industry sector.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.
