This program has a technical skills focus, preparing you for the workplace. The Diploma of Laboratory Technology provides a broad and flexible package of competencies which meet the needs of technical officers, technical specialists and similar personnel.
It will also provide you with an alternative and practical pathway into a range of undergraduate degree programs with advanced standing.

Entry to this qualification is open to individuals who:
hold a Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques
OR
hold a Certificate IV or higher-level qualification in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline
OR
can provide evidence of technical laboratory skills, knowledge and employment experience.
Applications by prospective students who have successfully completed Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques at another RTO with different electives are considered on an individual basis as they may not meet the pre-requisite requirements. Entry into the program for these students may impact the duration of their program.

The Diploma of Laboratory Technology program has no external accreditations but has strong links with industry (including private pathology laboratories, hospital pathology laboratories research and testing laboratories) through the student work placement, regular student/staff visits to laboratories and the Industry Advisory Committee (IAC).
Laboratories also often seek RMIT staff assistance when technician positions become available.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Resources available from the Library
As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.
Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT http://www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT wireless network in the Library. Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online 'Ask a Librarian' service.
The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals, newspapers and databases.
There are also specific subject guides available on the library website that will point you to a variety of resources available in the Library and those available online. Guides that you may find useful include Biomedical Science, Biotechnology & Biological Sciences, Human Anatomy & Physiology and Laboratory Medicine.

Learning services available to you as a student at RMIT

Computer laboratories with printing facilities are available in the School for students to use at any time that classes are not scheduled.
There are a number of specialised simulated workplace laboratories in which you will be trained to work. These include:
Chemistry Laboratory which has, in addition to routine equipment, a Touch Screen Analyser to perform "Point of Care" blood testing, the latest development in clinical diagnostic testing and an Autoanalyser that can perform a wide range of biochemical tests.
PC2 Containment Laboratory that is used for all of your microbiology, tissue culture and molecular biology laboratory work. It is equipped with two Biosafety cabinets, equipment for the isolation, purification and manipulation of DNA in addition to routine microbiology equipment. There is also a new digital fluorescence imaging system for examination of a wide range of cells and tissues. This lab also has industry standard equipment used in Histology, Haematology & Blood banking laboratories.
