Purpose of the Program

Surveying is based on the collection, management and presentation of information related to surveying, mapping and geographical information systems. These services are used in a wide range of circumstances and are an integral part of local, state and national land management programs, building and construction projects, environmental studies, navigational systems and monitoring of emergency situations.

This program provides the educational and practical training for a career in the surveying, mapping, and geographical information systems (GIS) industries.

The emphasis is on practical experience using industry-standard equipment. You will use various surveying technologies and software for electronic data capture, processing and presentation

Articulation and pathways

Graduates of the RMIT Advanced Diploma of Surveying are guaranteed entry into the: - 

- Bachelor of Science (Geospatial Science) (Honours) with up to 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year of full-time study).

NOTE: The Bachelor of Environmental Science (Geospatial Science) is undergoing review and may change in 2023. This may result in changes to the course structure, content, fees and exemptions.

- Bachelor of Applied Science (Surveying) (Honours) with up to 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year of full-time study).

Successful completion of the Diploma in Surveying or equivalent guarantees entry into the Advanced Diploma of Surveying.

External accreditation and industry links

This qualification is part of a nationally accredited Training Package CPP Property Services and was developed by the Construction and Property Services Industry Skills Council.

Students are eligible to apply for student memberships of the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute and the Institution of Surveyors Victoria.

The School has a very strong Industry Advisory Committee, which is the main link between the program and industry. Membership includes staff from local and regional surveying companies and government instrumentalities.

The committee meets twice a year and provides feedback on the currency of our programs, the changing needs of industry and has provided input into the customisation of the current program from the Training Package.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world. Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT or Library e-resources.

If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
