This qualification provides competencies to design, install/validate/evaluate and administer computer equipment and systems, manage risk, estimate and manage projects and provide technical advice/sales.
The objective of this qualification provides enabling competencies to gain theoretical and practical skills in computer hardware and software applications for assembly, installation, testing and maintenance of office personal computers and computer networks. Graduates will work as technical officers or service supervisors.
As a graduate of this program you may become responsible for personal computer support, and administering and upgrading networking facilities in small, medium or large-sized enterprises. The program is well structured to support you in the installation, maintenance and administration of large computer networks and computer infrastructure.
Your skills will be applicable to a wide range of business, manufacturing and operational occupations where application of knowledge in computers and software underpins the business operations.
The RMIT program is a blend of practical experience with computer hardware and software applications built on a strong theoretical foundation. You will achieve competencies in testing, assembly, installation and maintenance of office personal computers and computer networks. You will gain skills in operating a wide range of computer hardware and software such as personal computers, servers and network interconnection devices, CISCO devices and software applications for operating workstations, server operating systems, internet applications, and server applications.
The program offers a specialised articulation stream if you aspire to undertake a degree. The qualification is structured to deliver competencies, knowledge and skills required by the nationally accredited Electrotechnology Training Package. It includes a number of core and elective competency units in the major study areas.

Successful completion of the Advanced Diploma of Computer Systems Engineering guarantees entry into the Bachelor of Engineering (Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering) (Honours)-BH073 with up to 144 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1.5 years full-time study).
NOTE: The Bachelor of Engineering (Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering) (Honours) is undergoing review and may change in 2023. This may result in changes to the course structure, content and fees.
You can still apply for this course and you will be supported to transfer into the new qualification once it becomes available.

This program has been fully accredited by Engineers Australia in October 2021 for a period of 5 years.
Therefore, the graduates of the program are eligible for graduate membership of Engineers Australia at the Engineering Associate level.
The School has a very strong Industry Advisory Committee, which is the main link between the program and industry. Membership includes staff from Computer Systems based locally.
The committee meets annually and provides feedback on the currency of our programs, the changing needs of industry and has input into the design of new programs. It also actively contributes to the School through participation in industrial seminars and visits, marketing events, industry awards and scholarships

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
