Purpose of the Program

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Fashion and Textiles develops advanced research skills that will prepare you for a career in industry, academia and other settings in which systematic and critical analytical skills are required. It is designed for industry technologists, designers, merchandisers and marketers wanting to do original research in the disciplines offered by our School of Fashion and Textiles.

Our research supervisors' expertise along with our resources and collaborative relationships with industry and other research organisations has led to the evolution of several specific research fields, namely:
- design practice, process and presentation
- textile futures; advanced materials and performance textiles
- entrepreneurial and cultural studies

The Doctor of Philosophy may be undertaken in a project, thesis with publication or thesis mode. Prospective candidates should discuss these modes of submission with their potential supervisor/s prior to application.

Upon graduation with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from RMIT University you will be able to pursue an academic career in a university or be employed in the fashion and textiles industry as a Textile Designer, Textile Technologist, Fashion Technologist or Fashion Designer.
