Purpose of the Program
As a graduate of the GD052 Graduate Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety program, you will have the specialised knowledge and skills required to identify, prevent and control diverse occupational and environmental health risks and related health problems. The program emphasises design and entrepreneurial approaches to complex problems and aims to produce professionals that can systematically prevent and control hazards and exposures within a broad range of workplaces and community environments.
The program provides an opportunity to develop a wide range of knowledge and theory of:
- the global concepts of health, safety, and work, and the implications that these have in organizations
- the socio-political and organizational context in which work occurs and how this impacts work design and its effects on the workers
- the causes of fatalities, injuries, and ill-health arising from work
- recognition of hazards, assessment of their risk, and development of suitable controls.
Many of your assessments will incorporate industry practice by focusing on OHS in work situations.
The delivery of this program is blended comprising of face-to-face learning supplemented by online learning.
Graduates of this program are employed in a wide range of industries, usually in national and international companies or as consultants in industries such as construction, manufacturing, oit & gas, manufacturing, military, healthcare and agriculture.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.
Upon completion of this program, you can continue your studies in the Master of Occupational Health and Safety (MC282) and receive 96 credit points of exemption (equivalent to 1-year full-time study).
This program is also as an exit award of the Master of Occupational Health and Safety if you have successfully completed the 96 credit points listed in that structure. If you wish to exit early with the Graduate Diploma you must have completed all 96 credit points.
The Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (GC035) is available as an exit award of this program if you have successfully completed the 48 credit points listed in that structure. If you wish to exit early with the Graduate Certificate you must have completed all 48 credit points.
Upon successful completion of the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, you may also be eligible to undertake further studies in related Masters programs at RMIT University subject to each program’s entry requirements.

You must have successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification), or a minimum of 8 years professional work experience in a related industry. Applicants with professional experience at a senior level that is less than 8 years may also be considered.
To have your professional experience considered you must submit with your application a CV and a personal statement that demonstrates your academic foundation for masters study. This may include details on how your professional experiences relates to the program, demonstration of critical thinking in personal and/or professional practice, and communication and problem solving skills.
English language requirement
A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.
