Purpose of the Program

The Master of Applied Science (Acupuncture) aims to produce graduates who can practise acupuncture in a safe, competent, ethical and professional manner.

The program structure will provide learning experiences for you to acquire and apply sound knowledge of Chinese medicine theories and concepts across various clinical conditions. The program emphasises skills to address real patients in clinical settings.

This combination of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, clinical experience and recognised qualifications prepares you for a career in Acupuncture.

COTH2185 Professionalism and Australian Health Care System provides you research methods and COTH2131 Research Project provide you with a capstone experience, which will give you the opportunity to integrate, critically reflect on and consolidate what you have learnt in your program. COTH2185 provides you research methods and COTH2131 brings the methods into practice. The research project will give you experience in conducting systematic reviews and interpreting evidence in healthcare.

The program is workshop-based (scheduled face-to-face residential program at RMIT). While most courses in the program are delivered on campus, others via a combination of predominantly online activities supported by some campus-based activities. We utilise the RMIT online learning management system to support blended learning. You are expected to complete independent study prior to attending the workshops and conduct further clinical observation/supervised clinical practice while on-campus and/or off-campus.

You will integrate and apply knowledge and skills in the clinical context. The clinic experience will develop your capability to formulate diagnoses, and prescribe appropriate acupuncture treatments. Your clinical practice will be underpinned by an evidence-based approach. You will gain an insight into the rewards and challenges of independent practice in acupuncture and identify strategies for your ongoing professional development.

Students in this program may also elect to pursue a pathway toward further postgraduate studies in complementary medicine.  The program prepares you for registration to:

  • practice independently and own your own clinic
  • be employed in a multi-discipline health care clinic
  • teaching and/or research in complementary medicine
  • health advocacy, promotion or administration.
