Course Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify variations and recognise oral health issues through a visual check, observation of patient behaviour and habits, signs and symptoms and physical condition of patients. This enables the candidate to respond appropriately to the clinical findings to initiate follow up oral health care.
This unit applies to workers in a range of health and community services environments where their work role requires them to recognise and respond to oral health issues.
The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards for maintaining infection control, and industry codes of practice.

2.1 Obtain consent from the patient to conduct basic visual oral check and questioning from patient and/or family/carer
2.2 Ensure comfort of patient by developing trust and rapport, adapting environment and optimal time based on patient needs
2.3 Provide support for patient’s head or chin if necessary to enhance visual access without creating discomfort for the patient
2.4 Seek assistance from patient to open their own mouth to limit hand contact inside the mouth
2.5 Prepare and perform basic visual oral checks in line with own work role and use of standard precautions
2.6 Identify signs and symptoms of oral health issues that may indicate variation from normal and actively listen to and be aware of self-reports |

Details of Learning Activities
A combination of learning activities have been designed to help students to achieve learning outcomes of this unit:
- Facilitator led classroom based lecture and or workshop using PowerPoint Presentations
- Written classroom tasks
- Demonstration and classroom discussion
- Group discussions
- Participation in group activities based on simulated workplace exercises
- Clinical practice, peer evaluation/feedback session/completion of practical worksheets

- Self-managed research to support completion of assessment tasks.
Teaching Schedule
This unit is scheduled for delivery as per the timetable issued on Induction Day and is also located on BlackBoard. The classes will be delivered, on level 3 or 2 of Building 154, RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne).

Assessment Tasks
To demonstrate competency in this course, students will need to complete all the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard.
Assessment 1: Online quiz
Students will complete the online quiz via BlackBoard and must achieve 90%. You will have three attempts to compete the online quiz and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.
Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT
Assessment 2: Case Study
Students will submit the Assignment on dental products. and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.
Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.
Assessment Task 3: Clinical Logbook
Logbook is completed in the practical sessions they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.
Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.
Assessment Task 4: Basic visual oral health check (student to student)
Students will attempt the assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the P2 Assessment Outline. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.
Feedback to students will be provided at an allocated time at RMIT.
