Course Description

 

This course describes the skills and knowledge required to implement nursing care as outlined in a person’s plan of care, evaluate outcomes of care provided, record and report progress, and respond to an emergency situation.

 

This course applies to enrolled nursing work carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under supervisory arrangements aligned to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia regulatory authority legislative requirements.

 

This course includes a Work Integrated Learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.

1. Prepare a person for care procedures.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Explain the procedures, preparation required and timeframe involved and gain the person's consent. 1.2 Maintain the person's privacy and dignity and use a culturally appropriate approach during preparation and procedures.

2. Implement care procedures to meet identified needs.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Assist the person to address their personal and oral hygiene and their dressing and grooming needs in achieving health outcomes. 2.2 Identify contributing factors and implement appropriate strategies to prevent and manage skin breakdown. 2.3 Confirm the person's nutritional and elimination needs and apply strategies to meet identified needs. 2.4 Assist the person's respiratory function by demonstrating and promoting deep breathing and coughing exercises. 2.5 Use appropriate measures to promote the person's comfort, rest and sleep. 2.6 Actively encourage the person to contribute to their own independence and mobility through active and passive exercises. 2.7 Identify and respond appropriately to signs and symptoms of an emergency situation or condition. 2.8 Use emergency codes correctly and initiate basic life support according to organisation policy and procedures.

3.1 Maintain ongoing assessment of the person through observation and by using monitoring equipment and devices. 3.2 Prioritise work activities to address the person's urgent needs, maintaining a balanced approach to own workload. 3.3 Record and report concerns in the person's condition or behaviour to the registered nurse, and report situations of risk according to organisation policy and procedures.

4.1 Consult and collaborate with interdisciplinary team to identify and evaluate own contributions to the person's care. 4.2 Evaluate the person's progress towards planned outcomes as documented in the care plan. 4.3 Make required changes to nursing care plan in line with best practice in nursing. 4.4 Record and report all aspects of the evaluation of nursing care provided.


Learning Outcomes


The critical learning for this course takes place in clinical placement within the health sector and within simulations in RMIT laboratories.

You will be instructed in skills through demonstration, modelling and role-play. Skills development is supported by lectures on theory and underpinning knowledge, classroom discussions, group work, research and reflective practice.

 

 

On completion of this course you should be able to:

Assessment Task 1:  Simulation on an emergency and performance of Basic Life Support 

Due Date: Lab 3

You will perform basic life support in a simulated environment on an adult, child and an infant manikin. You will be observed by an RMIT assessor and feedback will be provided by your tutor.

 

Assessment Task 2:  Risk identification and prevention Case Study

Due Date: Week 3 Semester 2 2019

You will be required to develop, implement and monitor a plan of care using the information provided in a case study for this assessment.

 

Assessment Task 3:  Observation of Performance in Advanced Aged Care clinical placement CP2 and CP3

Due Date: Designated Clinical Placement Weeks

You will be observed by an RMIT Clinical facilitator and feedback will be provided. 

 

Assessment Task 4: Report on the evaluation of a plan of care -(Advanced Aged Care) Clinical Placement 2

Due Date: Two weeks following your CP2 (Advanced Aged Care) Clinical Placement

This assessment requires you to report on an evaluation of a plan of care that you have conducted in placement.

You will be required to evaluate a nursing care plan of a patient in your Advanced Aged Care Clinical placement.

This assessment will be written in a report style and submitted online 

 



You needed to be graded satisfactory on all assessments to be deemed competent in this course.

Placement

Please note an opportunity to repeat clinical placement is not guaranteed and will be at the discretion of the Clinical Coordinator/Program Manager.

 

Special Consideration

Use the special consideration process if your circumstances are such that you cannot fulfil assessment requirements. For example, if you are unable to complete any piece of assessment by a due date, you will need to apply for an extension.

Re submissions

You are permitted to have a maximum of 2 re-submissions for this course, however each individual assessment may only be resubmitted once.  Re submissions are not automatic and will only be approved at the discretion of the program coordinator after consultation with the teacher.

  All re submissions must be completed and submitted no more than 7 days after your work has been assessed.
