Purpose of the Program

The Associate Degree in Digital Technologies (Advanced Manufacturing) covers emerging digital manufacturing technologies that will provide you with essential skills and knowledge required by the Industry. This program directly aligns with Australian Government's initiatives to incorporate Industry 4.0 technologies into manufacturing sector and create new training opportunities for the workforce. Industry 4.0 uses transformative technologies to connect the physical world with the digital world.  

In this qualification you will receive training in the use of emerging technologies including Industry 4.0, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Additive Manufacturing, Digital Twinning, Supply Chain, Mindsphere, Smart Manufacturing, Robotics, Mechatronics, Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Digital Controllers, Sensors, Electrical Circuits and Motors, Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing, Automation & Process Control, Programming Logic Controllers (PLCs), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Software Applications and Cyber Security for Industrial Network. 

This program is a blend of practical experience with electrical, electronics and mechanical control applications built on a strong theoretical foundation. You will gain capabilities in configuring, testing, assembly, installation and maintenance of electrical and automation control systems and networks. You will complete an Industry 4.0 Capstone Project by undertaking project based learning and applying all the skills and techniques learned over the duration of the whole program.

Articulation and pathways

Articulation agreements between RMIT University programs enable you, on graduating from an RMIT program, to apply for credit towards a higher level RMIT qualification. 

Pathways

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. Successful completion of the RMIT Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation (Engineering) guarantees entry into the Associate Degree in Digital Technologies (Advanced Manufacturing).

Students enrolled in this qualification who have completed 96 credit points (Seven courses in the first year and either MATH2167 Mathematics 1 or MANU2522 Computer Aided Manufacturing) can exit with Diploma of Digital Technologies (Advanced Manufacturing) (DP018) qualification.

Graduates of C5398 Diploma of Applied Technology (22460VIC) will be guaranteed entry into AD028 Associate Degree in Digital Technologies (Advanced Manufacturing) at RMIT University and will receive credit of 96 credit points (equivalent to 1 year of study as follows:

  • MATH2167 Mathematics 1
  • EEET2276 Electrical Principles
  • MANU2524 Industrial Automation and Control
  • MIET2138 Engineering Management
  • EEET2617 Digital Control System Design
  • OENG1211 Industrial Manufacturing and Control Systems
  • COSC2954 Industrial Network Technologies
  • MANU2522 Computer Aided Manufacturing

Further study

Graduates of the RMIT Associate Degree in Digital Technologies (Advanced Manufacturing) (AD028) program are guaranteed entry into the Bachelor of Engineering (Adv Manufacturing and Mechatronics) (Honours) (BH068) and will receive 180 credit points (= 15 courses). Graduates who successfully complete EEET2616 Use of Digital Technologies in Health Care System as an option course in AD028 will receive a further 12 credit points (192 credit points = 16 courses).

Entrance requirements

Program entry requirements 

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education, successful completion of an AQF accredited award at Certificate IV or above, or equivalent.

For information on international qualifications and corresponding entry requirements that are equivalent to Australian academic entry requirements, see the Country equivalency page.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4 — a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in any other English.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.0, with no band below 5.5; or equivalent.

External accreditation and industry links

The School has designed this program in consultation with industry partners, including: FESTO, SIEMENS, Australian Industry Group (AIG), Memko, SEW Euro Drive, Defence, Telstra, Balluff, Omron, Beckoff Automation and JRD Communications. The engineering and manufacturing experts within these companies have helped RMIT to develop the program to be in line with the industry expectations and future needs. This program directly aligns with the Commonwealth Government's current focus on manufacturing and digital technologies to help build and drive the Australian economy.  RMIT has signed MoU with Industry 4.0 leaders SIEMENS and FESTO. This agreement has facilitated latest software tools and learning resources are accessible to you. 

The School of Vocational Engineering, Health & Sciences has an Industry Advisory Committee (IAC), which links the academic program and industry. Membership of the IAC includes staff from major locally-based engineering  and manufacturing firms, as well as RMIT academic staff. The committee meets twice in a year and provides feedback on the currency of programs and the changing needs of industry. This new program has been designed based on input from IAC members. Committee members will also actively contribute to the School through participation in seminars, marketing events, industry awards and scholarships.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
