Approach to learning and assessment

Learning in this program uses a variety of teaching and learning approaches, with a major focus on intensive photographic production and workshop practice. The workshops are places in which you will refine and develop your practical, theoretical and conceptual skills through development of an independently generated project proposal negotiated with supervisory staff. The program involves regular engagement in review, critique and analysis of work through discussion with staff and peers in both individual and group critiques and tutorials. Independent research forms an integral part of the program structure focusing on locating and developing your photographic practice within a broader understanding of historical and contemporary photographic narratives and providing a firm foundation for embarking on a career as an independent photographer or as preparation for further advanced study at post-graduate level.

Assessment involves 'learning by doing' and will include developing a range of project based photographic works, written relfections, oral/visual presentations, proposals and exegesis documents. The assesment you undertake will be designed so that your lecturer and/or peers can provide you with ongoing feedback on strengths and areas for improvement in your photographic practice. You will develop an Honours Independent Project in consultation with a supervisory team.  As a complementary piece of assessment you will also produce an exegesis about your Independent Project that presents your ideas and arguments in a way that responds to historical and contemporary photographic discourse, critique and research methodologies.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or Equitable Learning Services if you would like to find out more.
