Purpose of the Program
The double degree has a real-world focus with a problem/project based active learning approach and the learning activities and experiences are designed to foster your development as an independent learner so you will be able to extend your capabilities once you graduate. The teaching methods may include lectorials, seminars, tutorials, workshops, practical and laboratory sessions, site visits and provision of online materials.
The Bachelor of Food Technology and Nutrition is about the science of manufacturing food and making it safe and nutritious.
In this program you learn to turn raw materials such as milk and cereal grains into food products such as ice-cream and breakfast cereals. You also learn to improve the quality of manufactured food supply, creating safe and nutritious foods that have a long shelf life. You will be trained in the full range of theoretical and practical aspects of food technology and nutrition science. You will develop novel, healthy and functional food products that meet the consumer demands as well as industry’s strict safety and health guidelines.
The teaching approach in this program is designed to foster your development as an independent learner so you will be able to extend your capabilities once you graduate. The teaching method includes lectorial, seminar, tutorial, practical and laboratory sessions, and provision of online materials.
This program focuses on the Food Technology and Nutrition majors. In the first year of study, you will take foundation courses such as chemistry and microbiology as well as being introduced to food processing and nutrition. Later, your studies focus more on courses related to your majors. The nutrition major focuses on human health and nutrition courses while the food technology major deals with traditional and novel technologies employed in the manufacture of food products, as well as sensory evaluation of foods, product development and quality assurance.
The program prepares you to work in various sectors of the food industry including:
- Becoming the owner or manager of a food and/or food ingredient manufacturing company
- Working in a large food processing company
- Developing new food products with nutrition at their core
- Developing food management programs for schools or healthcare facilities
Bachelor of Food Technology and Nutrition provides you with a capstone experience, which will give you the opportunity to integrate, critically reflect on and consolidate what you have learnt in your program.
Your capstone experience in ONPS2719 Food Formulation and Design is designed to address the whole life cycle of the food industry by bringing together all you have learned in previous courses and thereby preparing you for being job-ready for a career in the food industry. You will experience Work Integrated Learning (WIL) through activities in courses OHTH2173 Applied Nutrition and ONPS2510 Rheology and Food Biophysics.
The Bachelor of Business is a generalist business education degree that prepares you for careers in diverse business professions and environments, within a global context. The degree is flexible, allowing you to develop generalist business knowledge or undertake more focused studies through a choice of majors, minors and cross-disciplinary study options. As a graduate of this program, you will develop the skills and knowledge for employment in large corporations, government, small to medium enterprises and small business, and not for profit organisations.
As a graduate of this program, you will be able to pursue traditional business specialist careers, such as an auditor, HR professional, investment advisor, legal and marketing professional. In addition, roles that have a cross-disciplinary perspective, such as global procurement, logistics, transformation manager, business behaviorist and digital marketing analyst.
The Bachelor of Business also provides a capstone experience at the conclusion of the program that is embedded in course BUSM2582 Business Graduate Folio. In the final year, this practical-based capstone course integrates outcomes of your self-directed journey for the purpose of careers, employability, further study, research, professional learning and/or self-reflection and celebration.
While most courses in the program are delivered on the City and Bundoora campuses, other courses are delivered wholly online or via a combination of predominantly online activities supported by some campus-based activities.

Articulation
Articulation agreements between RMIT programs enable students graduating from an RMIT qualification to achieve advanced standing in a higher level qualification.
Students who apply to transfer to one of the single degrees that are components of this double degree program, will be eligible for credit for any equivalent courses in the single degree structure, and may transfer credit for any other courses that can meet elective requirements of the single degree structure.
Pathways
Pathways refer to related programs for which you may be eligible once you have graduated from your current program. As a successful graduate of this program, you may (upon application) be eligible to proceed to MC237 Master of Food Science and Technology or other postgraduate programs. You may also be eligible to pursue BH012 Science Honours. Acceptance into these programs would be subject to each program's entry requirements.
The Bachelor of Business provides a specific and clearly articulated option for research pathways. Research-related courses are nominated as part of the program structure and research is embedded as a component of the integrated skills framework mentioned above. Students interested in a career in research have an option to pathway into the Bachelor of Business (Honours) or Higher Degree by Research.
RMIT graduates have had successful careers with major food companies. Graduates have progressed to managerial roles, regulatory advisor positions in government organisations, intermediary roles between food companies and the public, or technical expert positions in businesses providing analytical services.
Graduates of the food science and technology major may work for large food processing companies in research and development, marketing or quality assurance roles. Graduates of the nutrition science major may work for food companies in areas such as product development and nutrition consultancy or may continue their studies in postgraduate dietetics (subject to program entry requirements).

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.

Prerequisites
Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4 — a study score of at least 20 in one of: Maths: General Mathematics or Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics, or equivalent studies; and a study score of at least 25 in English other than EAL, or a study score of at least 27 in English as an Additional Language (EAL).
English language requirements
A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English equivalents web page.

As this is a double degree program, both qualifications have strong links with industry.
The Bachelor of Food Technology and Nutrition has an Industry Advisory Committee (IAC). Membership is diverse and drawn from external industry and professional institutions. This committee helps inform program development and ensure that program content and student learning outcomes remain closely aligned with the needs of future employers. In addition, academic staff maintain connections with industry to develop and deliver work integrated learning experiences as well as offer advice on professional careers.
The Bachelor of Business is closely linked to industry. This takes place in various forms. In the curriculum, some courses are designed as 'work integrated learning' (WIL) courses involving discipline related industry projects as part of learning. The College of Business and Law has established Industry Advisory Committees comprising of high-profile industry representatives. The role of the committees ensures the College of Business and Law's links with industry standards and practices remain current.
