Approach to learning and assessment

The teaching approach in this program is designed to foster your development as an independent learner so you will be able to extend your capabilities once you graduate. The teaching method includes lectorial, seminar, tutorial, workshop, practical and laboratory sessions, site visits and provision of online materials.

You will be expected to complete all prescribed out-of-class learning activities in preparation of scheduled face-to-face and online classes and encouraged to extend your learning through additional recommended readings and online activities. Of particular importance is the time spent in practice, laboratory based and work integrated learning activities that will develop your employability skills and capabilities.

Several courses in the program are delivered online, rather than on-campus, and you are likely to find that other courses transition to online delivery as you progress through the program. All courses use Canvas for electronic provision of course material, tutorial problems and/or other relevant documents.

Assessment is designed to give you the opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities. Various forms of assessment will be used throughout the program since the assessment you undertake will be appropriate to the objectives and student learning outcomes for each course Assessment may include class tests, quizzes, essays/reports, oral class presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects, practical assignments and timed assessment.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this program you will:    

• Undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice  
• Interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities  
• Complete these activities in real work contexts or situations.  

Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be in a simulated workplace environment.  

In this program you will be doing specific courses that focus on work integrated learning (WIL). You will be assessed on professional or vocational work in a workplace setting (real or simulated) and receive feedback from those involved in your industry.

In Bachelor of Food Technology and Nutrition:

In this program, you will have a capstone Work Integrated Learning course in ONPS2719 Food Formulation and Design and  where you learn to reverse engineer a food product and/or design your own product to meet a market need. 

In addition, you will be able to undertake WIL in the following courses: 

• OHTH2173 Applied Nutrition
• ONPS2510 Rheology and Food Biophysics 

Many courses in the Bachelor of Food Technology and Nutrition include guest lecturers from industry, government or the community and activities relating to industry as part of the learning experience. Work integrated learning experiences are included throughout the curriculum and clearly indicated as an integrated component of course choice.

In Bachelor of Business:

The Bachelor of Business includes courses that are ‘work integrated learning’ (WIL) courses. In these WIL courses, you will engage in activities that integrate theoretical learning with practical application in professional contexts and will engage you in meaningful and consequential learning activities. These courses involve you in interacting with organisations (industry, government and community) through discipline relevant projects and work placements. Many courses in the Bachelor of Business use s guest lecturers from industry, government or the community and activities relating to industry as part of the learning experience.   

Work integrated learning experiences are included throughout the curriculum and clearly indicated as an integrated component of course choice. The WIL designated courses in the Bachelor of Business are:

AMENDMENTS – SEMESTER 1, 2024

If you are graduating from the BP289 Bachelor of Food Technology and Nutrition/Bachelor of Business by the end of Semester 2 2023, the below changes will not apply to you.

If you have any questions regarding the below arrangements, please contact Business Connect. 

Major: Entrepreneurship 

• The major has been amended from six (6) core and two (2) optional courses to eight (8) core courses.
• The optional course BUSM4756 RMIT Fastrack Innovation Challenge has been removed from the program structure.
• The two optional courses BUSM4702 Social Enterprise and Innovation and BUSM2615 Open Innovation have now become core courses.

Transition Plan:

• If you have completed major prior to Semester 1 2024, the major will be recognised under the pre-2024 structure.
• If you have not completed the major before the amendment, BUSM4756 RMIT Fastrack Innovation Challenge will be considered a Business Option course and you will need to follow the updated structure to exit with a major in Entrepreneurship.

Major: Economics

• The two (2) courses ECON1582 International Industrial Organisation and ECON1586 Diverse Perspectives on the World Economy are no longer core courses. These are now part of the optional list of courses. 
• The two (2) courses ECON1611 Big Data, Machine Learning and Society and ECON1340 Strategic Games for Business are no longer optional courses. These will be part of the core courses.
• The course ECON1223 Data Modelling Techniques for Business has been added as part of the optional list of courses.

Transition Plan:

• If you have completed the major prior to Semester 1 2024, the major will be recognised under the pre-2024 structure.
• If you have completed ECON1582 International Industrial Organisation or ECON1586 Diverse Perspectives on the World Economy by the end of Semester 2 2023, you need to complete the following to meet the major requirements:
