Top of pagePurpose of the Program
The Diploma of Visual Arts reflects the role of visual artists who combine specialised technical, creative and conceptual skills to prepare for and develop an emerging arts practice. They are able to plan and realise a body of work in one or more art forms. Visual arts practice at this level is underpinned by a sound grasp of art theory and history and the ability to critically analyse and synthesise information from a range of sources. Discourse and communication around complex ideas are also required.
This program prepares individuals who wish to pursue a career as visual artists or in other creative fields. This is achieved by studying practical and theoretical courses developed in conjunction with the arts industry. Areas of study include painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, digital imaging, public art and art theory. The major emphasis of the program is the production of a folio of work that reflects your personal creative inquiry. The folio will display a sequential development, with emphasis on the acquisition of skills and the adaptation of those skills for a production of works based upon a sound personal philosophical base.
The diploma is developed around ideas of integrated course experiences, reflecting contemporary notions of the arts practitioner as multi-disciplined. The program prepares individuals who wish to pursue a career as visual artists, continue to further study or work in creative fields.
Students will be admitted into the lowest level qualification.

Pathways refer to related programs for which you may be eligible once you have graduated from your current program. Upon successful completion Diploma of Visual Arts students may be offered a place in the Advanced Diploma of Visual Art.

There are no minimum academic entry requirements for this program. Applicants must meet the minimum University entry requirements for this program. All applicants must complete and submit the Selection Task.
Selection task
The selection task requires:
- A statement outlining what you expect to learn from the visual arts program (maximum 100 words).
- A statement describing a recent exhibition you have seen (maximum 100 words).
- A folio consisting of 6 to 8 images of visual art work you have created. This should contain a variety of works that demonstrate your interests and creative thinking, as well as your conceptual and technical skills.
Examples of art works to consider for inclusion in your folio include, but are not limited to, drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, public art ideas, models, sculptures, visual diary extracts, sound and video.
Upload a PDF file of up to 8 images (maximum size 10MB). Alternatively you may supply a URL to an online space.ie website, blog, Tumblr, Flickr etc
International English language requirements
A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 5.5, with no band less than 5.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.
Top of pageExternal accreditation and industry links
This nationally accredited program is designed for adults wishing to engage in the visual arts. The accredited program is managed and reviewed by a state body which includes TAFE institutes.
The School of Vocational Design and Social Context has many close links with industry. These take on a variety of different forms. Many of the teaching staff within the program are practicing industry professionals with extensive industry experience and contact networks. This experience, when integrated into teaching and learning practice, enriches your learning environment. Academics within the School are strongly encouraged to maintain their linkages with industry.
As evidence of these links, students have opportunities to work with industry through project based work such as public art projects, exhibitions and community-based projects. At the end of the program, students combine the knowledge and skills gained throughout the program in an end of year graduate exhibition.
The School also runs an Industry Advisory Committee that consists of high profile industry representatives. The purpose of the Committee is to ensure that the School’s links with industry standards and practice remain current.
In addition, the School of Vocational Design and Social Context makes regular use of outside industry experts as guest speakers to ensure that students are exposed to current industry developments. The regular use of sessional teaching staff also provides students with exposure to current industry practitioners. Students are encouraged to visit galleries and museums within the program and on their own initiative.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library.
