Purpose of the Program

This program will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the engineering disciplines that constitute the life cycle of the product automobile.  It will expose you to state-of-the-art infrastructure and different work ethics, by providing you with the opportunity to carry out work experience or research projects at multi-national automotive companies worldwide.  The program is international in character; it aims to provide you with advanced technical and generic capabilities which will enhance your chances of employment in the global automotive industry sector.

There are two distinct and interrelated specialist automotive areas of activity in the global automotive industry sector. 

  1. Automotive Design and Development includes developed automotive industries that are knowledge intensive and with high value added products and services (e.g., Australia, Germany, USA, Japan).  
  2. Automotive Manufacturing Engineering Processes include emerging automotive industries where the focus is process intensive, relies on economies of scale and the pursuit of cutting-edge manufacturing technologies (e.g., China, India, Thailand).  

In catering for local and international students this program offers the flexibility for specialisation in either sector. It will instil in you the specialised automotive engineering skills that are currently in short supply, but are increasingly in high demand by the automotive industry.  

The objective of this program is to educate you as a leading professional automotive engineer who is able to: 

  • Analyse complex automotive systems and develop new systems to ensure enhanced vehicle operations
  • Find innovative solutions from an array of possibilities through systematic problem solving and system design methodologies
  • Analyse the automotive product from cradle to grave and adapt automotive design and manufacturing systems to deliver value for all stakeholders
  • Conceive novel designs for challenging problems and opportunities
  • Communicate with a wide range of key stakeholders in professional and effective manner
  • Lead, build and work with teams with trust and respect

The program requires in-person attendance, but also takes advantage of the capabilities of the online learning management system that is available to all students and provides scope for collaboration and remote access.

In this program you will undertake a capstone project in the 48 credit point course OENG1088 Master's Research Project (or the alternative of completing the two 24 credit point courses OENG1089 Master's Research Project Part 1 and OENG1090 Master's Research Project Part 2). In this project you will consolidate and expand the knowledge gained throughout the program through an in-depth experimental and/or analytical study of a highly technical and/or engineering management application.

This program is primarily delivered in face-to-face mode at the City Campus. While most courses in the program are delivered on campus, others are delivered online.

    Articulation and pathways

    If you have completed a Bachelor of Engineering program in Automotive Engineering, at AQF level 8 or equivalent, you may be eligible to receive up to 96 credit points of advanced standing into the program.

    If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for Credit.

    Pathways

    For domestic students, the following exit awards are available:

    • GC131 Graduate Certificate in International Automotive Engineering is available if you choose to exit the Master's program after 48 credit points. This excludes any courses awarded as advanced standing. 
    • GD164 Graduate Diploma in International Automotive Engineering is available if you choose to exit the Master's program after 96 credit points. This excludes any courses awarded as advanced standing.

    The capabilities developed by the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma are consequently less comprehensive than those developed by the Master's program.

    Note: these exit awards are not registered with CRICOS and therefore not available for international students

     

    If you have completed MC230 MEng (International Automotive Engineering) you will meet the eligibility criteria to apply for DR216 PhD (Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering). If you require further details on programs refer to the RMIT University Handbook or the relevant program manager or admissions officer.

    Dual Award

    The Master of Engineering (International Automotive Engineering) program has a dual masters agreement with the FH Aachen - University of Applied Sciences in Aachen, Germany and THI - Technical University Ingolstadt.

    Five students per year have the opportunity to take part in each of the dual masters programs, and would qualify to receive a master's degrees from both RMIT and the partner institution.

    Eligibility and selection criteria for admission into the dual award apply as follows:  

    • Eligibility: Applicants must be currently enrolled in the single award program MC230 Master of Engineering (International Automotive Engineering)
    • Selection: Academic merit (based on cumulative GPA)

    Students who are interested in a dual master program will be invited to submit an expression of interest to the MC230 Program Manager by week 10 of their first semester of study at RMIT (May or October).

    Formal application to the School will be due during your second semester (May or October), with the deadline for this to be communicated to you by the School.

    International students who wish to transfer into the dual award must be aware of the impact on their student visa and post study work rights and should consider the following: 

    • Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE) will be cancelled while studying in Germany. This may affect your Australian student visa. 
    • During the second year of studies, whilst in Germany, students will be required to pay fees to RMIT in accordance with the RMIT fee schedules and deadlines.

    FH Aachen - University of Applied Sciences in Aachen

    Students that commence their studies at RMIT in MC230 Master of Engineering (International Automotive Engineering) and wish to complete their studies at FH Aachen - University of Applied Sciences in Aachen need to successfully complete the first 2 semesters of the RMIT program including the prescribed courses as detailed in the course mapping table below.     Entrance requirements

    Program Entry Requirements

    Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or international equivalent) in one of the following fields: : Aerospace, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, Sustainable Systems or Automotive Engineering with a GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0.

    Applicants who have a successfully completed a relevant degree (as above) with a GPA of at least 1.5 out of 4, will be considered if they have at least 3 years of relevant industry experience.

    OR
    Successful completion of an Australian postgraduate qualification (or international equivalent) in a related discipline (as above).
    OR
    Applicants without any relevant prior qualification will be considered if they have at least 10 years of relevant industry experience.

    International qualifications are assessed according to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

    English Language Requirements

    External accreditation and industry links

    External Accreditation
    The Master of Engineering (International Automotive Engineering) is fully accredited by Engineers Australia. Engineers Australia is the professional body responsible for the accreditation of higher education programs that prepare students to practise as professional engineers. Engineers Australia is a signatory to the Washington Accord. This means that the program is internationally recognised and graduates are able to practise as professional engineers in many countries around the world. Graduates of the Master of Engineering (International Automotive Engineering) are eligible for graduate and/or professional membership of Engineers Australia.

    Industry Links
    The Master of Engineering (International Automotive Engineering) program was initially developed after a two-year world-wide consultation with a range of automotive companies and educational institutions. During this period the Schoo of Engineering obtained strong support from both the automotive industry and government organisations for the development of the program, including companies such as Ford Motor Company Australia and Air International (Futuris). The University of Applied Sciences Ingolstadt in Germany also supported the proposed program strongly and provided support for collaboration with both VW and Audi. The program was also supported by both Australian and Victorian Governments, and by the Automotive Industry Strategic Action Group (AISAG), VCAMM.

    Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

    Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

    Resources available from the Library:
    As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

    Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT wireless network in the Library. Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

    The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
