Course Description

This unit of competency, Create titles for screen productions CUFANM403A is delivered in the class Design Studio 1, together with Collaborate in a Creative Process BSBCRT402A and Make a presentation BSBCMM401A. This unit covers the skills required to create digital visual effects and titles for a screen based production. In addition, particular attention will be paid to motion graphic, broadcast design, and compositing effects.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 With reference to production documentation, clarify requirements for screen titles.
1.2 In consultation with relevant personnel, clarify work flow sequences to ensure that production schedule deadlines are met.
1.3 Identify the available budget for the production of titles as required

2 Identify items to be included in titles.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Produce and maintain a schedule of items to be included in titles.
2.2 Determine if graphic items need to be imported from other sources and source these items as required
2.3 Obtain copyright clearances to use imported items as required
2.4 Select appropriate fonts and/or create fonts as required

4 Create titles.

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Incorporate and manipulate moving or static graphic items to be included in titles
4.2 Modify titles and source items to ensure that the required visual effect is achieved
4.3 Trial various techniques and styles and produce initial compilation of titles ensuring that style, content and creative intentions are met.
4.4 Decide upon the appropriate parameters of display to meet with creative requirements and technical specifications
4.5 Review initial titles to ensure that they meet technical and creative requirements
4.6 Ensure that the movement of titles and other graphic items maximizes the visual impact required for productions
4.7 Ensure that titles incorporate captions with required images and sound, and are correctly synchronised with sound
4.8 Ensure that titles are legible and appropriately spaced
4.9 Record and store titles and other graphic images according to enterprise procedures

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Generate a range of ideas for the design of screen titles that respond sympathetically to briefs and provide creative solutions to all design issues
3.2 Discuss ideas and collaborate, as required, with relevant personnel to ensure contribution of ideas to initial concepts.
3.3 Continuously reflect on and appraise ideas for implications on cost, technical feasibility and suitability to meet specifications.

5.1 Present initial title compilations to relevant personnel for feedback
5.2 Participate in initial and ongoing evaluation of titles
5.3 Confirm accuracy of text, spelling, punctuation and content
5.4 Negotiate and agree to additional requirements and modify titles as required.
5.5 Ensure that agreement is reached with, and approval granted by, relevant personnel before proceeding with the final production of titles
5.6 Review process of creating titles and note areas for future improvement

Details of Learning Activities

Students are required to make extensive use of the lynda.com database and associated University library facilities, in researching and developing digital imaging, graphic and motion design skills and techniques. Structured online learning resources for this course can be found in the c5218 Diploma of Interactive Digital Media Blackboard Shell.

You will begin with a training needs analysis quiz. This quiz covers aspects of film and video, software authoring tools and some general design knowledge. The result indicates your understanding of concepts that are crucial skills for this course. At the completion of the course, you should be able to score full points.

Learning material for this course includes After Effects tutorials hosted on lynda.com, structured classroom activities such as team research and presentation tasks, animation and design races, project discussion and individual feedback.

Your two summative assessments will be individually animated short films. Formative assessments will be conducted and/or presented during class time.

Students are encouraged to make full use of class time, open studio time and University computer lab and equipment resources. You are advised to look at the course Blackboard page for ongoing updated information.
