Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to recommend the preferred scenario from a range of feasible options offered to the client. Students will work in teams produce a feasibility report for a small business Website, and then test their design.

 A range of learning activities are planned for this course including self-paced and collaborative classroom based activities.
The self-paced activities will be delivered thought various technology platforms and include your contribution to wikis and discussion threads, reflective journals, quizzes and interactive sessions.
The collaborative classroom based activities will include group discussion, group problem solving activities and opportunities to practice your skills in a simulated/real workplace environment.

Prescribed Texts

There is no prescribed textbook for this course. However the following text is highly recommended:   Lowery, J & Fletcher, M (2011), HTML5 24-Hour Trainer, Wiley Publishing, ISBN 978-0-470-64782-0   This book is pitched at an ideal level for beginning students. It covers and strong in both HTML and CSS and is very up-to-date. It is also quite moderately priced, and comes with some excellent interactive videos on DVD.   Other materials will include worksheets distributed by the teacher in class and various Websites which will be indicated.

Overview of Assessment

Students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of competency to be deemed competent.

A range of assessment methods are used to assess practical skills and knowledge, for example:

  • direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
  • review of authenticated documents from the workplace or training environment
  • demonstration of techniques

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.

Assessment Tasks

You are required to complete two assessments. You must successfully complete all sections of each assessment tasks to be deemed competent in this unit.

Assessment 1 - Individual Website Project

For this assessment task you are required to develop a static four page Website using the latest standards in HTML and CSS. You will build this Website over 7 weeks as weekly homework. Your Website will be uploaded to a Web hosting server and tested in different browsers.

Part 1 – HTML5 and CSS Template (Due date: Refer to Teaching Schedule)
A storyboard which feature the design of the website.
Project website first/index page with basic text, images and CSS styling.

Part 2 - Four Page Website (Due date: Refer to Teaching Schedule)
A four page Website with a menu, text, images, table and forms styled with CSS. The Website may be uploaded to a Web server

Assessment 2 - Group Website Project & Feasibility Report (Due date: Refer to Teaching Schedule)

For this assessment task you are required to work in a team to plan and develop a static Website for a small business, using the latest standards in HTML and CSS. Your Website must be tailored to the requirements of a client, preferably a real client.

Your Website will be designed, styled and laid-out with style sheets. As it is a team work, you will need to work effectively in a team, and manage your project to ensure timely completion and client approval. You should liaise with your client on a regular basis throughout the project. A project presentation will be scheduled to demonstrate your websites to the project stakeholders in week 15. You will also complete a feasibility report based on a business case study

To be deemed competent in this task you will need to submit and demonstrate each of the following criteria as listed below. The Website Project contains the following:

Part 1 - Feasibility Report (Due date: Refer to Teaching Schedule)
• Research and analyse your business case, define your project scope and clients requirements
• Research and recommend feasible solutions and alternatives for client
• Create your Website project feasibility report and project specification

Part 2 - Website with Coded HTML & CSS (Due date: Refer to Teaching Schedule)
• Basic teamwork and project management skills
• HTML and CSS code which is readable and validates
• A template for the Website with effective navigation
• Styling and page layout which meets client requirements
• Particular features such as forms, tables and email links
• Additional cutting-edge features (e.g. jQuery) with documentation
• Hosting on the RMIT Web server with appropriate folders
• Acceptable appearance in popular Web browsers

Late submissions of work required for developmental stages of the project will be eligible for grading at pass level only.

Submission Requirements

You should:

• Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date.
• Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
• When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use a cover sheet that includes a declaration and statement of authorship. You must complete, sign and submit a cover sheet with all work you submit for assessment, whether individual or group work. On the cover sheet you declare that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work. An assignment cover sheet for submission of each assessment task is available on blackboard.

Late Submission Procedures

You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates.
If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days.

Resubmissions (VET Programs):
If you are found to be unsuccessful in a Course Assessment Task you will be allowed one resubmission only. Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission. The highest grade you will receive if your resubmission is successful is “CAG”.
If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.
