Work Integrated Learning:

Students enrolled in this course will be required to undertake placement as part of the assessment of the course.  A number of requirements must be met by students to ensure eligibility for placement.  Further details on each of these are available in Part B of the Course Guide and on MyRMIT.

  • Immunisation Declaration Form part A & B completed in full.  All vaccinations an d annual requirements (ie influenza and TB screening) must be completed in full prior to attending placement.
  • RMIT student deed (annual requirement)
  • SHBS authorisation form

There is no flexibility with these requirements.  It is your responsibility to ensure THESE REQUIREMENTS ARE COMPLETED.  Any student who has not provided this information in full will not be able to attend placement and will receive a fail grade for the placement course.


Course Description

This course is identified by RMIT University as a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience in which knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a clinical workplace context, feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.

Students will undertake a supervised professional placement in a prearranged clinical setting for a prescribed period of time. Students will work with a registered nurse in the healthcare team to continue building on acute care and/or mental health nursing skills acquired in preceding and current semesters. Students will provide nursing care under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, and develop skills required for time management and prioritisation of nursing care.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability you should contact the Program Coordinator or the Equitable Learning Services for further advice. Students need to be able to meet the inherent requirements of the program.

At any time prior to or during your placement if there are concerns raised related to your fitness to practice the clinical coordinator can request that you gain full medical clearance to continue your placement.

You will be notified of specific placement details as early as possible via Inplace. The placement information is subject to change at any time up until placement, so please check your student e-mail account daily. Please note: You may have to travel up to 4 hours to attend the clinical venue allocated.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Plan and implement culturally relevant and age specific nursing care for a minimum of two to three patients with support from the registered nurse, considering time management and prioritisation of nursing care.
  2. Demonstrate safe practice in relation to Occupational Health and Safety and risk management measures in the provision of supervised care for the acute care or mental health patient.
  3. Employ effective communication skills with the clinical nursing staff and interdisciplinary healthcare team. Including recognition of reporting in a timely manner to ensure clinical or academic judgement.
  4. Apply clinical reasoning within the context of evidence based nursing care to provide optimal outcomes for patients.
  5. Assess, administer and evaluate pharmacological therapies under the direct supervision of the registered nurse.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to effectively evaluate your nursing care against the patient care requirements.


Overview of Learning Activities

This course is a Work Integrated Learning course that will be conducted in the healthcare setting. Students will be required to undertake 160 hours of supervised nursing practice in a designated clinical setting under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. As support and preparation for this WIL experience there will also be clinical preparation time allocated throughout the semester as a timetabled learning experience.

Students will actively participate in patient care as part of the health care team during all WIL experiences.

Independent Learning: In line with the professional responsibility for active life-long learning you are expected to undertake self-directed learning activities during this time to develop and consolidate knowledge obtained during the WIL experience.

The activities associated with this course are designed to enable students to apply acute care and/or mental health clinical skills and knowledge in a supported supervised clinical setting, building on theoretical learning from preceding and current semesters.

Overview of Assessment

All assessments are required to be completed for a pass mark in this course. This clinical course awards a pass or fail mark. 

All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the College Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching).

Hurdle requirements are required in order to provide evidence of competency to the accrediting organisation the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC).

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1: Pre placement requirements There is no flexibility with these requirements. It is your responsibility to ensure these requirements are completed. Any student who has not provided this information in full will not be able to attend placement and will receive a fail grade Unsatisfactory (NH) for the placement course.

This assessment task supports CLO 2

Assessment Task 2: Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT) : Satisfactory Pass (PX) / Unsatisfactory Fail (NN)

The assessment associated with this course will comprise of assessment of your clinical skills and care using the recognised ANSAT which measures your progress across the professional standards.

You are required to demonstrate nursing practice congruent to the level of a beginning Year 3 undergraduate nurse. If you are deemed unsatisfactory, remedial action using a learning support plan will be undertaken to provide clear objectives the student needs to work towards in order to successfully pass the placement. Failure to engage with a learning support plan will result in removal from clinical placement and an NN fail grade for the clinical course.

If students are deemed unsatisfactory, the clinical coordinator and BN program coordinator will review all evidence provided by the healthcare facility. If it’s deemed the student has not met objectives set out in the learning support plan, the student will receive a NN fail grade, and be required to enrol in the next course offering. On some occasions, students may be offered a make- up placement with continuation of the learning support plan. Any action resulting in the clinical venue terminating the clinical placement will be subject to WIL termination process.

All learning outcomes will be assessed during the 160 hours of this Professional Experience Placement.
