Course Description

This course will provide an introduction into the speciality nursing practice of acute paediatric care. It will focus on the assessment and management of children, in particular the deteriorating child, the context of the family. This course is designed to provide an insight into this speciality area of practice, especially if you are considering a career in paediatric nursing.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for the Bachelor of Nursing Program BP032 in accordance with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse:

  • PLO 2: Practices within a professional and ethical nursing framework
  • PLO 3: Practices within an evidence-based framework
  • PLO 7: Provides comprehensive, safe and effective evidence based nursing care to achieve identified individual / group outcomes
  • PLO 8: Evaluates progress towards expected individual / group health outcomes in consultation with individuals / groups, significant others and interdisciplinary team
  • PLO 9: Establishes, maintains and appropriately concludes therapeutic relationships

Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Explain the professional and ethical behaviours consistent with paediatric practice;
  2. Evaluates and interprets paediatric assessment and findings to describe how a child differs in anatomy and physiology to an adult, including the principles of basic life support;
  3. Demonstrate the ability to obtain information from a parent – guardian, regarding a child’s condition;
  4. Apply pharmacological knowledge and management (including medication calculations) of paediatric medication;
  5. Apply theoretical aspects of Paediatric nursing to support safe and evidenced-based practice in caring for simulated paediatric patients including conditions specific to the paediatric cohort;
  6. Review the context of life limiting illness as it applies to the paediatric patient.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.
