Course Description
This course will provide an introduction into the specialty nursing practice of acute paediatric care. It will focus on the assessment and management of children, in particular the deteriorating child, the context of the family. This course is designed to provide an insight into this speciality area of practice, especially if you are considering a career in paediatric nursing.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for the Bachelor of Nursing Program BP032 in accordance with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse:
- PLO 2: Practices within a professional and ethical nursing framework

- PLO 7: Provides comprehensive, safe and effective evidence based nursing care to achieve identified individual / group outcomes
- PLO 8: Evaluates progress towards expected individual / group health outcomes in consultation with individuals / groups, significant others and interdisciplinary team

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:
- Explain the professional and ethical behaviours consistent with paediatric practice
- Evaluates and interprets paediatric assessment and findings to describe how a child differs in anatomy and physiology to an adult, including the principles of basic life support.
- Demonstrate the ability to obtain information from a parent – guardian, regarding a child’s condition
- Apply pharmacological knowledge and management (including medication calculations) of paediatric medication
- Apply theoretical aspects of Paediatric nursing to support safe and evidenced-based practice in caring for simulated paediatric patients including conditions specific to the paediatric cohort.
- Review the context of life limiting illness as it applies to the paediatric patient
Overview of Learning Activities
RMIT have state of the art simulated learning facilities for student learning and practice. You will participate in simulated practice within these facilities in preparation for placement. As a part of participation you may be filmed for learning, teaching, reflection and assessment and this is considered an inherent part of our learning and teaching program. Recordings will be maintained in accordance with our assessment, document retention and privacy policies.
Teacher Guided Hours: 36 per semester - comprising 18 hours of lectures, 18 hours of laboratory practice
Learner Directed Hours: 84 per semester - comprised of independent learning, completion of readings, case study and self-learning materials and skills practice in the clinical nursing laboratories.
Overview of Learning Resources
The learning resources associated with this course will include targeted readings from a range of primary and secondary sources. Where possible, all selected material will be digitally available to you. Lecture material may be delivered using a variety of flexible learning modes such as Collaborate Ultra, Discussion Board or workshops and group work. These modes will be utilised at the discretion of your lecturer. RMIT will provide you with additional resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems accessed via your myRMIT site.
