Course Description

The Research Project is a one-semester course that will review and build on research methodologies introduced in COTH2185 Professional Issues and Australian Health Care System. You will be expected to undertake a research project to demonstrate your ability to critically analyse literature on the efficacy and safety of Chinese medicine practice. This course provides the knowledge, skills and their application to complete a research project specifically in Chinese herbal medicine or acupuncture. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes for MC138 Master of Applied Science (Chinese Herbal Medicine) and MC024 Master of Applied Science (Acupuncture):

  • PLO 3: Critically analyse the literature in the efficacy and safety of acupuncture and moxibustion or Chinese Herbal Medicine and incorporate this information into your professional evidence based practice
  • PLO 6: Reflect on and improve upon your professional practice and build problem-solving skills and abilities through lifelong learning


On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Identify strategies for lifelong learning, reflective practice and evidence-based clinical practice of Chinese medicine.
  2. Access and appraise clinical evidence resources for acupuncture or Chinese herbal medicine.
  3. Investigate and evaluate the evidence base pertaining to the practice of Chinese herbal medicine or acupuncture.
  4. Conduct a research project specifically related to your area of clinical speciality demonstrating a knowledge of research methodology; ethics; rigour and validity of outcome


Overview of Learning Activities

This course will use a range of learning activities including lectures and self-directed learning. Throughout the course you will be able to work both independently and in groups to solve problems involving aspects of content covered in the course. Project oriented learning is an important component. You are encouraged to participate in Canvas Discussion forum, to actively search for information and gain further understanding of the research process and your research topic.

The learning resources associated with this course will include targeted readings taken from a range of both primary and secondary sources. Material chosen may be digitally available to you. Lecture material will be delivered via online media. RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.
