Course Description

This course will enable you to engage in an individually negotiated research project based on a project or issue related to your professional context or in a setting of your choice. You will work collaboratively with peers on a real-life industry problem with guidance from industry to understand the challenges raised.

You will expand and enhance your cross-cultural communicative skills and knowledge through engaging in problem-based tasks that focus on language issues in a globalized context.

This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience. 

It is designed as a capstone experience to enable you to synthesize and integrate knowledge, connect theory and practice as well as demonstrate holistic achievement of program learning outcomes. The course provides an opportunity for you to more deeply investigate a particular area of scholarship and professional practice in the field.

Program Learning Outcomes

This course will develop the following program learning outcomes:

PLO1: Communicate effectively in a range of forms and in different international and cross-cultural contexts, using appropriate modes of communication including electronic, written, graphic, oral and aural forms with audiences within and external to the discipline. 

PLO2: Critically reflect on the role of culture in communication and society and apply this knowledge in a range of cross-cultural interactions locally and globally. 

PLO3: Work independently and in diverse teams to solve problems, using effective communication strategies demonstrating ethical and reflective practice. 

PLO4: Adapt and develop effective communication strategies to address linguistic diversity in the workplace. 

PLO5: Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse contexts within language related fields.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
1. Critically discuss and apply theories and frameworks relevant to global language industry and practice.
2. Critically reflect upon and apply feedback to your own and others’ work and be able to identify, apply and evaluate strategies and skills such as feedback and peer review to work effectively in teams. 
3. Propose and plan an applied project in a global market context.
4. Present a project, justifying how this work informs your future professional practice as a leader in your field.

 


Overview of Learning Activities

This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience.   You will undertake a project or placement where you will research, critique, question and compare industry practices.   Learning activities will include intensive workshops, presentations, independent research, and individual or group work activities.

 


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources for learning in this course through our online systems. A list of recommended learning resources will be provided, including books, journal articles and web resources. An introductory overview of key literature, concepts and processes/methods relevant to your project and working with industry will be available as well as additional references are also provided to you if you wish to follow particular themes in more detail. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. 

Assessment 1: Project proposal - 30% (CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4)

Assessment 2: Progress report - 20% (CLO1, CLO2, CLO3)

Assessment 3: Report - 50% (CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4)

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
