Course Description

In this unit students will develop the skills and knowledge to apply specific communication techniques to establish, build and maintain relationships with clients, colleagues and other stakeholders based on respect and trust.  This unit applies to work across a range of workplace contexts where workers at all levels may communicate with individuals and/or groups both in person and in writing.

  • Form groups according to teacher preferences (random, student led, choose one partner and join another two groups). Groups must be minimum 5 participants.
  • Explain that students will be conducting a REAL event/activity on RMIT grounds during May.

Assessment Tasks

Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency.  To be assessed competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace. To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.

Role Play and self reflection questions:

Task 1 – Role play

You are required to work in groups of three (3) to conduct a role-play of resolving a difficult situation.

Task 2 - Reflection questions

You are required to answer a series of questions based on your own experiences and your knowledge of communication to build relationships.

You are required to read each scenario and answer the questions provided, there are a total of 11 questions in this assessment.

Online quiz:

For this assessment you are asked to respond to nineteen (19) questions which relate to workplace scenarios and requirements for use of communication to build relationships with diverse people in the community services sector.

Assessment Task 4 

Meeting presentation

For this assessment you are asked to organise and run a staff meeting. The information collected in Assessment task 1 and answers to each of the task questions will help you to set up a successful meeting.
