Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge you will require to construct removable orthodontic appliances. The appliances you construct would be used in industry to move patients teeth into a position that will provide better function and aesthetics. You will construct a range of appliances to cater for the various needs of a patient. All procedures are carried out in accordance with work health and safety (WHS) policies and procedures, current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards, state/territory legislative requirements and organisation policy.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course you will be able to demonstrate, on a consistent basis, the construction of removable orthodontic appliances. You will develop your manual dexterity bending wires of varied gauges to facilitate various functions, coupled with processing acrylic in a range of colours to appeal to the aesthetic needs of patients.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed in a simulated workplace and under the normal range of work conditions.

You will be assessed on both the essential knowledge and the demonstration of essential skills through;

Completion of practical exercises - including detailed self reflection of each exercise
Practical exam
