Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to explore and apply the design process in a 3-dimensional (3D) way in response to a brief. This is a core unit in design fundamentals and as such underpins many other specialisation units.

In this course, you will develop the skills and knowledge required to use equipment and materials to creatively explore outcomes for 3-dimensional forms. You will develop an understanding of the design principles and elements and apply these through the design process.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment Task 1

This assessment is the First of three assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this unit. This first assessment has four parts.

  1. Part A: Research information on 3D design.
  2. Part B: Idea generation and concept refinement.
  3. Part C: Build the clay model.
  4. Part D: Submission and reflect upon own work

Completing all parts allows you to demonstrate a range of performance and knowledge skills required to address the unit of competency BSBDES303 Explore and apply the creative design process to 3D forms.

These include:

  • Sourcing information on 3D design
  • Exploring the creative design process for 3D forms
  • Communicating the concepts or ideas through the application of the design process to 3D forms


Assessment Task 2

This assessment is the Second of three assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this unit.

Successfully completing all parts allows you to demonstrate the performance skills required to address the unit of competency BSBDES303 Explore and apply the creative design process to 3D forms.

The Art Deco movement, modernism and streamlining were some of the most important inspirations in design in the last 100 years. Form no longer needed to follow function, mechanisation and glamour came to influence designers around the world. The style is symbolic of the energy of the early 20th century and it continues to this day.


Assessment Task 3

This short-answer assessment task is one of three assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this unit.

This assessment task allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of Exploring and applying the creative design process to 3D forms. There are seven (7) short answer questions that relate to work relevant scenarios.

You are required to demonstrate all learning outcomes to a satisfactory standard.
You will receive feedback with verbal and/or written evaluation of your progress within class time. 
The submitted projects will be assessed with written feedback as well as a checklist that relates to separate components of the project and the overall outcome.
