Course Description

In this course you will learn the skills and knowledge required to prepare, set up and shoot different screen content using professional camera equipment in a single camera environment.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Contribute and discuss ideas for shots and visual interpretation of production requirements in pre-production briefings

1.2 Evaluate shot ideas in line with production requirements

1.3 Survey locations prior to shoots and determine camera positions required to achieve shots and compositions

1.4 Check equipment is in working order and fix minor faults or refer to technical specialists

1.5 Plan, prepare and pack required camera equipment and accessories

1.6 Select capture media according to production requirements

1.7 Anticipate work health and safety (WHS) requirements as they apply to preparation and implementation of shoots

Details of Learning Activities

In class activities will include a range of teacher directed group activities, projects, class exercises, review discussions/lectures and independent project based work.

Out-of-class activities include completion of individual design and pre-production work, preparation for class presentations and production work. Online research and occasional outside of class time group discussions will be required to maintain project work.

  • Become familiar with Adobe Premiere and ingest material and practice edits. 
  • Manage Media Assets: Correct labelling of media, Ingest of media and correct file location in Editshare. PremierePro tutorials.

Week 3 

Practise camera and audio mixer set up and location check. Conduct Risk Assessment on and for location.

Shoot ENG

  • Operating a professional video camera
  • Compose shots/address lighting conditions
  • Select and use corrective filters and lens
  • Coordinate crew to position and operate camera
  • Monitor the quality of the moving image -Media exchange.
  • Running performance tests and checking signal quality. Identification of connections and connectors

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral/written presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights. Full assessment briefs will be provided and can be found on CANVAS.


Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete the following assessment tasks to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessments and once you have demonstrated competency you will also receive a result after your final assessment task.


Assessment Tasks

Semester 1

Assessment Task 1: Gather News Shoot Virtual production planning. Conduct pre-production meetings, plan your virtual production and complete a safety risk assess. You will be formed into a team with 3 or 4 other people to shoot a series of video images including a Piece to Camera, Vox pops and cutaways Due Week 7, Semester 1.

Assessment Task 2a: Interview ENG Shoot. This assignment allows you to choose a topic and create a video to tell a story, describe an activity that you are passionate about and or talk about something that you are interested in. Due by Week 14, Semester 1.

Assessment Task 2b: Interview ENG Shoot Reflection. Write a 100-word reflection about your interview assignment. Due by Week 14, Semester 1.

Assessment Task 2c: ENG Quiz. Short answer questions on the ENG Shoot. Due by Week 16, Semester 1.

Semester 2

Assessment Task 3a: Shoot Collide events. This event occurs over a three - week period for six days. You will be rostered to take part in the crews to shoot a large scale –large crew production typical of those shot in a major studio or on a large sound stage- the 'Collide' music events as a camera operator. Due Week 9, Semester 2.

Assessment Task 3b: Collide Quiz. Short answer questions on the Collide Shoot. Due Week 9, Semester 2.
