Course Description

In this course you will acquire the skills and knowledge required to mix music that has been recorded live or in a studio. This involves using sound editing equipment and associated software to balance instruments, vocals, and recorded or imported sounds.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Clarify mixing requirements in consultation with required personnel, with reference to documentation from recording sessions as required

1.2 Agree on format for final mix and required timeframe with required personnel

1.3 Plan work schedule and allocate sufficient time to complete mix and organise required equipment

1.4 Organise and set up mixing equipment and associated software as required

1.5 Discuss with required personnel problems that may arise during the mixing process and identify mitigation strategies

2.1 Follow work health and safety (WHS) procedures and use safe work practices when using sound mixing software and equipment

2.2 Set headphones and studio monitors according to requirements

2.3 Balance musical parts, recorded and imported sounds according to mixing requirements

2.4 Remove unwanted sound from each recorded track in the mix

2.5 Apply enhancing effects to music mix according to mixing requirements

2.6 Assess mix against client preferences, mixing brief and stylistic conventions, and adjust as required

2.7 Seek feedback on draft mix from required personnel and adjust as required

3.1 Save and deliver final mix in required format for mastering

3.2 Complete documentation on final mix and confirm information is provided for mastering and other required personnel

3.3 Confirm work environment is cleaned after use and restored to pre-mixing condition

Details of Learning Activities

In class activities will include a range of teacher directed group activities, projects, class exercises, review discussions/lectures and independent project based work.

Out-of-class activities include completion of individual design and pre-production work, preparation for class presentations and production work. Online research and occasional outside of class time group discussions will be required to maintain project work.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral/written presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights. Full assessment briefs will be provided and can be found on CANVAS.


Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete the following assessment tasks to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessments and once you have demonstrated competency you will also receive a result after your final assessment task.  

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1: Knowledge Questions. Answer a series of questions on the knowledge areas. Due by Week 10, Semester 2.

Assessment Task 2: Mix Recorded Music - Mix Sound Recordings (Major Recordings Project). In this task you are required to mix the three (3) songs that you created as part of implementing your sound recording plan to record three (3) final sound recordings. The sound recording plan has been created in the Unit CUASOU415 Record Sound. There are two parts to this assessment.
1. Observation checklist
2. Reflective report Due by Week 16, Semester 2.
