Course Description

In this course you will learn the skills and knowledge required to manage the production of sound designs, including planning and directing the production, engaging specialists where required, and overseeing and evaluating sound design projects.

2.1 Organise and secure personnel, equipment and facilities needed for production of sound design

2.2 Contract and brief required personnel according to production brief

2.4 Anticipate issues that may arise during production of sound design, and plan to reduce risk accordingly

3.1 Source and obtain all sound components required to meet sound design specifications

3.2 Confirm sound components meet copyright requirements

3.3 Direct sound design recordings to achieve sonic finish and style according to production requirements

3.4 Seek feedback from required personnel about final sound design recording and negotiate changes as required

3.5 Manage conflicts that arise and negotiate solutions in line with production schedule

3.6 Confirm master copy of sound design recording is saved in required format for playback media in line with production requirements

3.7 Confirm backup copies of sound design recording are saved in required format and provided to required personnel

3.8 Complete and update production documentation as required according to organisational procedures

Details of Learning Activities

In class activities will include a range of teacher directed group activities, projects, class exercises, review discussions/lectures and independent project based work.

Out-of-class activities include completion of individual design and pre-production work, preparation for class presentations and production work. Online research and occasional outside of class time group discussions will be required to maintain project work.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral/written presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights. Full assessment briefs will be provided and can be found on CANVAS.


Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete the following assessment tasks to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessments and once you have demonstrated competency you will also receive a result after your final assessment task.

 

Assessment Tasks

 

Assessment Task 1: Knowledge Assessment. This assessment taskis designed to allow you to produce evidence of the knowledge required to manage the production of a sound design project. Many of the questions relate to the fundamentals of
working in the music industry and refers to areas such as legislation, media formats for saving
recordings and booking recording studios. Due by Week 4, Semester 2.

Assessment Task 2: Sound Design Production Plan. In this task you are required to undertake research and planning for 2 different types of bands during the Collide events which is a series of live productions, performed and recorded in RMIT’s new media precinct. The 2 bands play different genres of music which have different production and equipment
requirements. Due by Week 12, Semester 1.

Assessment Task 3&4: Direct the Production and Finalisation. In this task you are required to direct and finalise the production of two events - Collide and Chicago.

1. The first event is sound recordings for multiple bands as detailed in your Sound Design Production
Plan.
2. The second is captured audio and video material from a live event.  

Due by Week 16, Semester 2.
