Course Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to use training packages and accredited courses as tools to support industry, organisation and individual competency development needs.
It applies to individuals who are working in or with training and/or assessment organisations as an entry-level trainer, teacher, facilitator or assessor using a pre-defined training product, such as a training package or accredited course.

1. Select appropriate training package or accredited course

1.1 Confirm the training and/or assessment needs of the client

1.2 Identify and source training packages, qualifications and/or accredited courses that could satisfy client needs

1.3 Use training products in line with vocational education and training (VET) sector requirements, and the training and assessment organisation’s quality assurance policies and procedures


2. Analyse and interpret the qualifications framework

2.1 Read and interpret the qualification framework, and packaging rules of the identified qualification

2.2 Review and determine applicable licensing requirements and prerequisites

2.3 Determine suitable electives that meet client needs and job roles

3.1 Select skill set, individual unit or accredited module to meet client needs and document reasons for selection

Learning Outcomes

The learning outcomes for this course will enable the learner to:

  • analyse a training package and/or accredited course
  • examine its component parts
  • identify relevant qualifications and units of competency or modules
  • contextualise those to meets the specific needs of one client

Details of Learning Activities

During the Design cluster of units, you will participate in both face to face workshops and online learning activities such as: analysis of case studies and scenarios, role plays, developing learning programs, group discussions and working in groups. Other activities will include: online research, and reading articles provided by your trainer.

At RMIT Work Integrated Learning (WIL) refers to opportunities for you to experience either real or simulated workplaces within your program. WIL activities in this program include:

  • Simulations of training and assessment work environments
  • Work based projects completed within your own workplace.

Many students who undertake this program are already employed in a training and assessment role. Some assessment activities are conducted in a workplace and you are encouraged to use your own workplaces for this. If you do not have a workplace please consult your trainer about alternative arrangements.

For the rest of this program students will design and develop a learning program as a major case study activity. Students may base DES Task 1 on this case study.

Overview of Assessment

The unit TAEDES402 Use training packages and accredited courses to meet client needs is holistically assessed with TAEDES401 Design and develop learning programs. Assessment will consist of

  • a set of knowledge questions
  • a project where you design and develop a competency-based learning program
  • a project where you design and develop a learning program

Assessment Tasks

There are three (3) tasks where you have to achieve a satisfactory result for each task in order to be deemed competent in the unit:



1. Assessment Task 1: Design and develop a competency-based learning program where you

  • provide background information about the program
  • design and develop a learning program plan, including a risk control plan
  • provide copies of the unit the program is meant for and the packaging rules governing that unit
  • a competency matrix
  • review the learning program with key stakeholders
  • review the developmental process undertaken


2. Assessment Task 2: Design and develop a learning program where you

  • provide background information about the program
  • design and develop a learning program plan, including a risk control plan
  • analyse the benchmark or unit of competency and Foundation Skills required
  • Evidence of Foundation Skills Checklist from your assessor


3. Assessment Task 3: Answer the fourteen (14) knowledge questions.
