Course Description
This unit covers the competency to interpret and use relevant concrete standards and codes to produce drawings for the detailing of reinforced concrete elements of buildings in accordance with accepted practices as outlined in AS 1100.501 and AS 3600.

Details of Learning Activities
Teacher Directed:
Teacher led face to face and one on one instruction using overheads and notes covering the concepts of preparing concrete engineering drawings to the appropriate standards. This will cover each element in the designated areas of underpinning knowledge and include:
- Correct interpretation and application of AS 3600: Concrete Structures Code, AS 2807.1: Residential
Reinforced Concrete Code and CIA Reinforced Concrete Detailing Manual and current local practice in the
placement of reinforcement. - Correct drawing of Concrete Outline using plans, sections, views and details.
- Correct identification, labelling and dimensioning of reinforcement.
- Correct drawing of bar types and shapes, hooks, cogs and bends.
- Correct display of bars and fabric with reference to other reinforcement and elements of the structure and
requirements of adequate cover. - Correct use of appropriate system of bar marking to identify reinforcement.
- Preparation of bar schedules and calculation of steel quantities.
- Extraction of appropriate data from AS 3600 to determine splice and anchorage lengths for various
conditions. - Correct application of AS 1100 and interpretation and
Simulated Workplace activities:
In a computer lab using Computer Aided Drafting software, students will prepare structural engineering drawings of the following;
- Footing plan, ground and floor plans of a concrete building
- Reinforcement layout within floor plans of concrete building
- Wall and footing details and placement of reinforcement within
- Concrete beam details with reinforcement
- Retaining wall setout plan and retaining wall detail
- Details of concrete building with reinforcement
- Expansion joint details
Student Self Directed:
Using the internet students will research AS1100, S 3600: Concrete Structures Code, AS 2807.1: Residential
Reinforced Concrete Code and CIA Reinforced Concrete Detailing Manual and current local practice to further their knowledge of concrete construction and drafting. Students are encouraged to view and analyse a variety of real life projects to help them understand their drawings and put their theory into context.
