Top of pagePurpose of the Program
The Photography Honours program will introduce you to research as a mode of practice-led inquiry in the multiple narratives of contemporary photography. Intensive studio and workshop practice will develop your capacity to creatively explore photography through a critical analysis of research and practice. You will be required to attend on-campus classes throughout the delivery of the program so that you can produce high quality photographic works, with access to photographic studios, editing and printing facilities. On-campus classes will also provide opportunties for you to critique your own work and the work of others in a group setting with your lecturers and fellow students.
The program will engender you with greater self-reliance in initiating and undertaking independent research as an integral part of your professional and scholarly development. This will prepare you for independent professional practice and with the appropriate knowledge and skills required for further studies at postgraduate level.
Successful completion of the program may provide a pathway to higher degree research and see you prepared to work nationally and internationally in the various fields that define contemporary photography.

An honours degree is the most common pathway if you wish to undertake postgraduate research. Upon successful completion of this program you may be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University, or other universities, including the Master of Photography (coursework), Master of Fine Arts and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
Successful completion of the Bachelor of Arts (Photography) with a GPA of 2.0 guarantees entry into this program.
If you successfully complete this program you will be guaranteed entry into MC270 Master of Photography with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study).
If you have already developed areas of knowledge and skill included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for credit.
Top of pageEntrance requirements
You must have successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in a relevant photographic discipline with a minimum GPA of 2.0 (out of 4.0).
International English language requirement
A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.
Selection tasks
All applicants must complete and submit the selection task. Some applicants may be required to attend a folio presentation.

In Australia there are no professional bodies that accredit or require a Bachelor of Arts (Photography)(Honours) for membership. All staff teaching in the program are photographers, artists, curators, writers and/or creative practitioners with strong links to the photographic industry both nationally and internationally. The curriculum of the program is consistently informed by consultations with an advisory committee whose membership is drawn from a wide range of photographic and creative institutions and professionals.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
