Purpose of the Program

This qualification provides competencies to design and validate/evaluate electronics and communication equipment and systems, manage risk, estimate and manage projects and provide technical advice/sales.
The objective of this qualification provides enabling competencies to gain skills and knowledge to design and validate / evaluate electronics and communications equipment and systems, manage risk, estimate and manage projects and provide technical advice at a para-professional level.
As a graduate of this program you may become responsible for a range of industries / fields , such as manufacturing, telecommunications, radio communications, electronics equipment and services, security systems, scientific instruments, and sales, and administering and upgrading electronics and communications equipment and facilities in small, medium or large-sized enterprises. The program is well structured
to support you in the installation, maintenance and administration of electronics and communication infrastructure. Your skills will be applicable to a wide range of business, manufacturing and operational occupations where application of knowledge in electronics and communications underpins the business operations.
The RMIT program is a blend of practical experience with electronics and communications applications built on a strong theoretical foundation.
You will achieve competencies in testing, assembly, installation and maintenance of electronics and communications equipment and systems, manage risk, estimate and manage projects and provide
technical advice. You will gain skills in computer-aided drafting and electronic design, computer interfacing, microprocessor programming, design, testing and commissioning of analogue and digital electronics systems, computer programming and perform simulations using various engineering software packages.
The program offers a specialised articulation stream if you aspire to undertake a degree.

The qualification is structured to deliver competencies, knowledge and skills required by the nationally accredited Electrotechnology Training Package. It includes a number of core and elective competency units in the major study areas.

Articulation and pathways

Graduates of the  Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation are guaranteed entry into the  C6178 Advanced Diploma of Electronics and Communications Engineering.


Further study

Successful completion of the Advanced Diploma of Electronics and Communications Engineering guarantees entry into the BH073 Bachelor of Engineering (Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering) (Honours) with up to 144 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1.5 years full-time study.

Entrance requirements

For domestic cohorts 

Successful completion of Australian Year 12 (or equivalent) 

or

Successful completion of Post-Secondary studies in a related field (Certificate II or above)

or

At least 6 months of full-time work experience in a related field as per a detailed resume (or part-time equivalent).

For international cohorts  

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school qualification from another country). 

Successful completion of equivalent qualifications, e.g.: completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post-secondary diploma in the relevant discipline. 

Please Note: To study this program, applicants will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests: 

 IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 5.5 (with no individual band below 5.0) 

 TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 50 (with a minimum of 5 in Reading, 5 in Listening, 14 in Speaking and 15 in Writing) 

 Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 42 (with no communication band less than 36) 

 C1 Advanced: minimum of 162 with no less than 154 in any component. 

All direct overseas student applicants to RMIT are assessed to ensure they meet the appropriate language proficiency at the pre-engagement stage by specialist staff in the RMIT Admissions team. This is undertaken prior to issuing Student Offers and Confirmation of Enrolment for Student Visa purposes. These assessments by RMIT admissions are mapped from globally recognised language testing conventions to RMIT IELTS entry requirements for the program. External accreditation and industry links

This program is fully accredited by Engineers Australia. Graduates of the program will be eligible for membership of Engineers Australia at the level of Engineering Associate.
The School has a very strong Industry Advisory Committee, which is the main link between the program
and industry. Membership includes staff from Electronics and Communications Industries based locally. The committee meets twice yearly and provides feedback on the currency of our programs, the changing needs of industry and has input into the design of new programs. It also actively contributes to the School through participation in industrial seminars and visits, marketing events, industry awards and scholarships.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
