Top of pagePurpose of the Program
As a successful graduate of the MC282 Master of Occupational Health and Safety program, you will have the specialised knowledge and skills required to identify, prevent and manage complex and diverse occupational and environmental health risks and related health problems. The program emphasises design and entrepreneurial approaches to complex problems and aims to produce professionals that can systematically prevent and control hazards and exposures within a broad range of workplaces and community environments.
The first year of the program provides an opportunity to develop a wide range of knowledge and theory of:
- the global concepts of health, safety, and work, and the implications that these have in organizations
- the socio-political and organizational context in which work occurs and how this impacts work design and its effects on the workers
- the causes of fatalities, injuries, and ill-health arising from work
- recognition of hazards, assessment of their risk, and development of suitable controls
In the second year of the program there is the opportunity to choose a minor in one of three areas:
- Occupational Hygiene
- Construction Safety
- Human Factors and Ergonomics
These minors provide you with skills and knowledge required for competitive professional practice both in Australia and internationally.
You can also choose to generalist path in studies. If so, you will select courses from two or more minors which will provide you with a wide span of skills and knowledge applicable to multiple areas of occupational health and safety.
You will learn to apply these concepts in a range of contexts, allowing you to develop confidence and proficiency in your professional OHS and construction safety, occupational hygiene or ergonomics practice. Many of your assessments will incorporate Work Integrated Learning (WIL) by focusing on OHS or your minor in a work situation.
In year two of the program you will undertake a capstone experience either through Research Investigation 1 & 2 (BUSM3213 & BUSM3214), Industry Project Investigation (BUSM4415) or Occupational Hygiene Project (PUBH1404). In these courses you will synthesise and integrate your knowledge, connect theory and practice, and demonstrate holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes.
The delivery of this program is blended comprising of face-to-face learning supplemented by online learning.
Graduates of this program are employed in a wide range of industries, usually in national and international companies or as consultants in industries such as:
Occupational Hygiene: High risk industry such as construction; manufacturing; oil and gas, transportation including aviation, railways, shipping; military, healthcare and agriculture.
Human Factors and Ergonomics: Manufacturing, Design, Aviation, Healthcare, Automotive Construction and Offices.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.
The Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (GD052) is available as an exit award of the Master of Occupational Health and Safety (MC282) if you have successfully completed the 96 credit points listed in that structure. If you wish to exit early with the Graduate Diploma you must have completed all 96 credit points.
The Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (GC035) is available as an exit award of the Master of Occupational Health and Safety (MC282) if you have successfully completed the 48 credit points listed in that structure. If you wish to exit early with the Graduate Certificate you must have completed all 48 credit points.
Upon successful completion this program, you may be eligible to undertake further studies into a Masters by Research or a Postgraduate Research program in Applied Science or other related programs at RMIT, subject to each program’s entry requirements.

You must have successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification), or a minimum of 8 years professional work experience in a related industry. Applicants with professional experience at a senior level that is less than 8 years may also be considered.
To have your professional experience considered you must submit with your application a CV and a personal statement detailing your experience.
English language requirement
A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

Accreditation and Memberships
The Master of Occupational Health and Safety (MC282) is accredited by the Australian Institute of Health and Safety (AIHS). All graduates of MC282 will be eligible to apply for membership with the Australian Institute of Health and Safety (AIHS). The AIHS is the body representing occupational health and safety (OHS) professionals and practitioners in Australia.
Graduates can apply to become an AIHS Graduate Member and with three years of industry experience can become certified professional members.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.
